Aww, I feel bad for him, too! It sounds like you're feeling fine and he knows now you can't eat raw eggs. It really is hard for them to get all of this stuff straight - obviously they care and want the best for us and the babies, but it is hard enough for us to remember all the food 'rules!' My husband forgets and asks me if I want a glass of wine, but then tells me I shouldn't eat too much chocolate because of the caffeine lol.

Also, I am a vegetarian too, and I had the best luck finding better, natural protein powders at the health food store. There are a a few options now with no artificial flavors and sweeteners that I think taste just fine.

I just talked with him and he seems good, so I'll make sure later tonight.

I know this is not the topic really but I feel SO BAD for your husband now :( I am sure he feels awful. Men can feel so clueless and left out during pregnancy and parenting so if I were you, assuming you're still fine, I would give him some extra TLC so he doesn't start feeling like a total incompetent this early in the game!

haha I sent him this thread so that he knows I'm not just going crazy, and I think he's got his tail between his legs now. I know it was just an honest mistake (that he thought was just a clever ploy)..

I'm appreciative of all these protein ideas! I always forget about hummus, but I love it and should eat more of it to get more protein. Also, peanut butter!

I don't understand why. There are so many other things you can do for protein. What about adding yogurt? Silken tofu?

What I did a lot in the first tri was roasted chickpeas. I would toss them with a little olive oil and spices, then spread them on a cookie sheet and toast them until crunchy. Very high protein, healthy snack.

But, if you didn't mind the taste, you CAN buy pasturized eggs at most grocery stores. They're a fantastic source of protein, so if you'd drink it again, I'd go for it.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: It took about 12 hours. Ohmigosh it was the worst thing I ever had! I threw up at home constantly for about 18 hours and then we went into the hospital for fluids and zofran. I wish that on no one! I was so stupid, but the cookie dough was so delicious that I couldn't help myself!

I ate raw cookie dough in my pregnancy and was one of those unlucky ones who ended up with salmonella. You should be fine at this point ( I think the risk is like 1:20,000 eggs), but still I wouldn't make it part of your routine :)

Like everyone said, I'm sure you are fine, but I wouldn't do it again. I just wanted to jump in and say that when I was little, my mom used to make us milkshakes with raw egg in them, for the extra protein. Obviously, none of use kids were pregnant, but it used to be a sort of normal thing to do. Then they came out and said raw eggs were bad (my mom was very likely a little behind on that one anyway) so she stopped doing it, or would get the pastuerized egg beater type things. It sounds totally gross to me now, but we sure loved them when we were little.

I don't think it's a huge deal now that it's said and done, but nobody likes surprises! And he definitely should've mentioned what was in his protein shake.

My favorite protein powder is by Optimum Nutrition. I buy it on Amazon for half the price of GNC. It mixes well without that weird aftertaste.

I would be pissed! Even if it's just a precaution, you should have a say in what you eat or don't eat. If you buy pasteurized eggs in the future with the purpose of eating them raw, you should be fine. I think most eggs you get from the grocery store are unpasteurized.

I'm vegetarian too and had major food aversions during the first tri. I think I lived on potatoes and bread. 0 protein.
Just some reassurance that for me, the aversions lifted in second tri and I actually started craving protein somewhat. I was able to eat eggs, tofu, and beans and felt better about my protein intake.

Good luck!

I had raw and runny eggs often during pregnancy and beyond. The 'runny eggs' thing to me is another one of those scare monger things that I try not to worry about. What's more important is that you and your little bean are getting a good mix of all the food groups.

We went to the midwife last week and she asked how my eating/health has been. I'm a vegetarian, and I told her that I'm likely not getting as much protein as I should be. She said that I could make smoothies in the morning and add protein powder to increase my protein intake. We went to the store yesterday and I couldn't find any powder that looked OK to get (or yummy), so I held off. I bought protein bars, nuts, and other things with protein in them instead.

Well, I wake up this morning and DH made me a really delicious looking fruit smoothie. I took a few sips and it tasted like it had protein powder in it so I asked what he put in it (knowing we didn't have protein powder in the house). He names off a few fruits and a juice, and I go along drinking it. I'm almost done, and he tells me he put raw eggs in it! raw eggs! He said he was really worried about it after our appointment so he did it and decided not to tell me (knowing I wouldn't drink it). I was so frustrated I wanted to cry, but he tells me he googled it and its completely safe (even for pregnant woman). Of course by this point, I want to puke. But, maybe he's right? Have you guys had raw eggs in your pregnancy? I'm just nearing the end of my first tri (12W5D).
