Of course you are not alone! But your story cracked me up!!

I probably repressed many of the bad experiences but this one came to my mind. One weekend my husband was traveling and it was just me and LO. It was a few months back when we were in the middle of potty training. He would always insist on going home to potty if he needed to go.

We were out at a park for the afternoon, and I didn't feel like or have enough time to go home to cook, so we went to this restaurant. It offers healthy food, doesn't have a big dinner crowd and you have to order and pay at the counter (so I don't have to wait around). LO didn't eat his food at all, and was getting bored when I tried to finish my food asap. Then suddenly, he announced he needed to go home and pee pee, got up and ran straight to the door! It freaked me out and I quickly asked for a box, box our food up in the speed of light and ran after him. It was so embarrassing because he wasn't super easy to begin with, and I was like this crazy mom that half way into the dinner my toddler ran out and I ran after him. Thank God I didn't have to wait for a check! And like you said I probably wouldn't go back there after at least a year.

ETA: Oh right, last summer when he had no concept about breaking things. When we were seated, he got ahold of a ceramic plate in front of him and picked it up and played with it. I was like oh no please put it down you are going to break it! He heard "break it" and smiled and threw it deliberately on the ground and it shattered everywhere. The whole restaurant went silent. Oh how I wanted to crawl into a hole. LO looked shocked and he was indeed sorry, and he said sorry when the annoyed waiter who was sweeping up the shattered glass. I couldn't even leave at that moment because we literally just got seated. I guess the good thing is he never ever did it again because he had gone through it.

Bad experiences never stops me from dining out with my child though. The thought of having to cook on weekends just propel me to take the risk :)

@blackbird: I would have let her lick all the ketchup she wants if it meant I could eat peacefully. My daughter will actually dip anything/everything in her ketchup including fruit. If it gets her to eat and sit quietly, I'll let it go...

@Mae: we had a ton of stuff with us! None is as entertaining as the Ice in the cups, the breakable plates, and the benches, though. I don't even want to think about eating at 6:00 or something when service is slow and there are more than half a dozen people in the place. Eeeeep no @reyorra: she never even wanted food! Just wanted to play in it. And lick ketchup @Ra: oh god that's bad. Breaking things just adds insult to injury

She was a doll at a skate park tonight and ate pizza totally fine for MIL, apparently, lol. Unpredictable!!!

B has this *awesome* new move in restaurants where he gets pissed and does the world's fastest ninja sweep kick and kicks all food/drinks/plates off the table. It's infuriating, yet mildly impressive.

@Mae: That's a great idea about asking for the check right away.

My daughter's most recent restaurant flip out was actually at the end of the meal when all the adults were done eating and plates had been cleared and we took her plate away too. Well apparently, she was not done yet and was not happy that we took her food away. I'm not yet in the mindset of asking waiters to bring her food first, but she was pretty good at waiting since she got to eat the veggies off my mom's salad while waiting for her entree. But in the future, I'm going to ask for her food first since she always wants to be a member of the "clean plate club" but is also a slow eater.

Oh man that sucks... I'm dreading this. We sort of live in constant fear lol. We won't go out very often with her, and when we do we will only go on weekend days in mid-afternoon so it won't be busy and we can be in/out fast. And I take a ridiculous amount of toys and food she likes. And her sippy cup that she is obsessed with and generally makes her happy. And I always ask for our check and pay it the second we order our food so that if LO ever spazzes we will hopefully have already paid and can just get the f out of dodge fast. lol

@rachiecakes: I love it!

@looch: dinner has gotten crazy at home lately. She wants to stand at the table, she wants to sit in a big girl chair, then she tantrums and tries to melt out of her booster, then throws food and we have to calm her down before she will eat. It's just so darn unpredictable. She eats and that's it, time to be done.

My son only recently (he's 4) is able to eat a meal at a restaurant. It's the waiting that is killer for us, I just can't bring enough crap to keep him from wiggling all over the place.

He doesn't do it at home because we only call him to the table when the food is ready to eat.

@blackbird: Did this happen on a Friday night? We made that mistake about a month ago and took the kids out to dinner on a Friday night. They were both awful. We had to shovel down dinner and leave ASAP. We've noticed that if we take the LOs out on a Friday night, they are just too tired from the end of a long week. I think we made the same mistake during the fall sometime and vowed never to go out on a Friday night again, but then forgot recently. I think the only two times we've had really bad restaurant behavior is Fridays because we've definitely been out to dinner other nights and have been fine.

Ugh. Last week we planned to go out the day before Valentine's Day on a date. Our babysitter woke up sick, so we decided to just take LO out to eat and then come home. We went to PF Changs and the server gave us 3 fortune cookies, which was cute. So, I like LO suck on his. After a few minutes I took it away from him and he flipped out. Screamed so loud that I had to take him out while DH finished paying. AWFUL. Everyone was looking at us.

@blackbird: Oh no!

How's this? My mom and I went to DC to help my sister with her kids while she was there for a wedding. We took her 2 yo, my almost 2 yo, and her 3 mo out to dinner. My LO was being really difficult, throwing silverware on the floor, etc. Luckily it was a loud, family-friendly, Mexican restaurant, and I don't think it was TOO disruptive, though the poor waiter kept running over to pick up everything she dropped. There was a couple seated at the table behind us; the man looked sympathetic, but the lady looked annoyed. At one point, I took the 3 mo old to the bathroom to change him. While I was gone, my LO apparently stuck her fork in her quesadilla and chucked it backwards over her shoulder. IT LANDED IN THE MAN'S BEER!!!! My mom said she almost died, she was so mortified. At the same time, she was laughing so hard she was practically crying when I returned to the table and she was trying to explain what had happened. So embarrassing! We bought the man a new beer and high tailed it out of there!

Since we are sharing stories, here's mine: the last time we ate out J insisted sitting on my lap. He ended up diarrheaing and leaking all over himself and through his pants and onto mine. I took him to the bathroom where there was no changing table (it was a small restaurant)... And had to wrangle him, wipe him clean, and change his diapers and clothes while he was standing up. Since he was standing up diarrhea also dripped onto the bathroom floor so I wiped that clean too. Then I had to clean myself up. I didn't bring a change of clothes so I walked out of the bathroom with my pants wet and looking like I had wet myself. Fun times.

We rarely eat out anymore bc it is so so stressful wrangling J at restaurants. Half the time he's just playing with his food instead of actually eating it and he is LOUD. The upside? We are saving money not eating out! So I guess that's the silver lining!

@woodentulip: we also had a puke all over a restaurant experience. Lovely.

As far as behavior, our 23 month old is a good eater so he's fine as long as there is food. But we often have to trade off walking around outside with him to avoid melt downs. We've never left somewhere early but I've ceryainly cleaned up my share of thrown food.

Hahahahaha I know it's not funny at the time but this thread has made me feel so much better!

I've been ther friend. We went with four other couples and their kids. All kids sitting nicely and reasons my quietly. Mine is throwing cutlery all over the room and eventually pulls the tablecloth and breaks several dishes. Worst day ever. And all the moms were all smirky, ugh
