@skibobrown: oh I get the issue at school...that's why I'm suggesting to wait it out at home. She needs to know that naptime means resttime. I'd try not going back into her bedroom after putting her down for her nap...it's worth a shot! G luck!

@Mrs. Sunshine: They do after a period of time. But first she has to lay on her cot for a little while, during the time when all of the other kids are falling asleep. Her teachers certainly don't make her lie quietly in her cot for 2 hours straight. They bring DD to the library to "read" books after probably 20 minutes or so. I'm mostly worried that she refuses to be quiet and lie down even for those 20 minutes.

@bunnylovesbear: The problem is that at daycare there are lots of other kids in the room who also are trying to fall asleep. When she jumps up and down, yells, and sings, that prevents the other children from falling asleep. Plus, all of her antics keep her from realizing that some days she really is tired. Since she never just stops and lies down, she never gives herself a chance to fall asleep.

I just wouldn't return to her bedroom during naptime. What's the point in going into her room to tell her she needs to lay down? I think being put in her crib should be explanation enough. My son is few months over 2, and he's been doing the same thing. But I'll just put him in there, tell him it's naptime, give kisses etc. and won't return for an hour. Sometimes he sleeps, someone's he doesn't. My son only goes to school twice a week, and he will lay on his mat for naptime, but doesn't always sleep there either.

We had a temporary nap strike and motivated Colin to nap with a sticker chart. We would talk about it and then go to nap and. Then as soon as he was up, we would hustle over and give him a special Spider-Man sticker. Every day thereafter he would high five his spider men before nap.

Would the school allow her to play with a quiet book or something? I know there are lots of ideas all over the Internet for things like to help keep kiddos quiet & occupied

I'm pretty sure 90% of the topics I've ever started on this site have to do with the napping habits (or lack thereof) of my daughter. Here's the newest wrinkle:

DD is 2 and a half, and has has recently started to drop her final nap. She typically only naps 2-3 days per week now. She is at daycare 5 days per week, and she is equally likely to skip her nap there as at home.

At home, when we put DD down for nap, soon after we leave her room she starts jumping, laughing, singing, shrieking (with joy)... and typically eventually crying when she bangs a body part on the side of her crib. We have tried everything in our arsenal (short of spanking, which we're not comfortable with), to convince her that she must lie down and at least be quiet for 1 hour during nap time. (In actuality, we can rarely get her to be quiet for even 5 minutes.) When we come back to her room to tell her to be quiet, she laughs at us. She thinks we're hysterical. Last week she pulled the same stunts at daycare, and she was sent to the director's office because she was keeping all of the other kids in her class awake with her antics.

I'm at a loss for what to do. It is extremely maddening to have a toddler laugh in your face when you are trying to tell them they are being really bad. I know I could just let her skip her naps altogether, but she's going to need to lay down during nap time every day at school until she's at least 5 years old. This is behavior that really needs to be addressed, and I have no idea what to do. Help me, please!
