I read this article yesterday. I was so impressed that the app creators implemented her suggestions. I’m going to recommend the app to our daycare. They clearly really care. The daycare chain the family attended, on the other hand, wouldn’t comment on whether they implemented any changes.

I already put my bag in the back. Since the baby is rear facing, I have all that space in the floor behind her car seat. I also am in the habit of opening the sunroof and/or leaving a door open if I plan to unload cargo before the kids; that way, if I should go on autopilot and miss getting them out, at least their cries could be heard near the vehicle. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to hear a crying child outside a sealed up car?

I know for a fact that this can happen to anyone. I once headed into the store without my sleeping dog. I realized it just before I walked in the door. And that was before I lived in the sleep-deprived state of parenthood.

The article also discusses how the mom was looking at pics of her baby on the daycare’s app during the day, not realizing she was looking at pics from the day before. I do find it strange that daycares don’t call when a kid doesn’t show up.
But since this incident, the app added a big gold check mark on each kid’s profile so parents can see/confirm the baby has been checked in for the day.
The mom in the article also talks about how parenting books, etc. warn you about all sorts of things, but this is not one of them.

Yes we do this, plus we text each other when we have dropped our son off. I just pile all our stuff in there when I buckle him in the seat. We alternate pick ups and drop offs so it makes me feel safer to do stuff in the back and the text. I do wish cars had some kind of alarm or system as this could happen to anyone unfortunately.

@Foodnerd81: I have also heard of an alarm that you put on your door that sounds to tell you to check the back. I wish that came standard in cars.

I’ve seen this idea before and think it’s smart!

But, the only thing I’m thinking is usually when this kind of tragedy happens, it seems like it’s because there was something out of the ordinary- like dad was supposed to drop off at daycare instead of mom, that kind of thing. So I feel like the unusual circumstance would make it less likely that the parent would also follow the bag in the back idea, if that makes sense? Still- it’s a good idea!

I can’t see myself forgetting my kids now since they are always with me so it’s very unusual when they aren’t, but k admit I have forgotten to buckle my 4 year old into her car seat a couple of times- always when I did something else while they were getting into the car (pick up a package, put on a bandaid) and I go into autopilot. Luckily she always yells that i forgot, but last time I had pulled out of my parking spot already! So I see how this kind of thing happens.

This is so heartbreaking. My kids are too big and noisy for me to forget them now, but for those with little ones who might fall asleep, consider using the “Bag in the Back” idea!

https://www.wsj.com/articles/from-a-mothers-tragedy-a-call-to-action-1525274572

For those who don’t have access to the article, it’s just the idea to put a purse, wallet, cellphone or something else you won’t forget (or will quickly realize you are missing) in the back with your baby in a car seat. That way, in the unthinkable scenario that you forget to drop off your baby at daycare, you notice or realize quickly and prevent an even more unthinkable tragedy...
