I forgot to add LO is 16 months old and we are getting
Him the strider for Xmas. We went to a bike store and the strider is for ages 18 months and up. We put the seat all the way down and LO fit on it.

We have both a trike and balance bike. I got the trike used off craigslist and the balance bike was a hand me down so, we're lucky that we didnt spend much for both. My son enjoyed both. He rode the trike mostly after turning 2 and the balance bike after turning 3. But he is not the most adventurous kid which is why it took us a year to convince him to try the balance bike. I feel that the balance bike was a bigger factor in terms of him learning on the real bike though. My daughter is 2 now and can maneuver the bakance bike on her own. Her favorite ride is the scooter though.

@T-Mom: oh that makes sense. I meant that I worry when I hear about them for older kids (Mrs. Cowgirl got hers for a 3 y.o. etc), but I like the longevity concept, and that you specifically think it will work for your 2 y.o. Thanks for the clarification!

@MamaCate: we actually only got it when my DD was 4 (wish I had known about it before then!) , but what I was trying to say is that it's versatile enough for children of different ages, as in my case. We got a yellow color with the idea of handing it down to my DS in mind, and now he's really excited to use it. My DD actually really also liked her trike a lot. The only thing you don't get from a balance bike is that pedaling action, which the kids also enjoy. have fun!! :-)

@skibobrown: Thanks--this is super helpful! I don't know anyone IRL with the trike although it looks cool on amazon, so I want to make sure we get something worthwhile for her present.

@T-Mom: the more i am researching, and getting feedback from all of you, the more i am leaning toward the balance bike. I am so glad to hear you have been able to make it work for such a long time and with a 2 y.o.!

The strider is a great choice if you want a balance bike. It is super low to the ground but the seat is adjustable all the way up to a 5 yr old (you can buy a extended seat) which is great for reuseability. My DD used a strider and is not transitioning to her big girl bike, and my DS has got the strider now (2 yr old).

I think I'd go with the balance bike. Our 18-month old loves her 4-1 trike, but she's already almost done with the second stage... so I think by age 2 you wouldn't get as much use out of the trike to make it worthwhile.

@MamaCate: I was just looking up balance bikes yesterday. Thinking about getting it for DD for Christmas or her bday in Jan. Mrs. Cowgirl wrote a post about it. Do a search for balance bike. She got the Strider one for lil CB.

We have a balance bike and it is amazing. It is instinctual for kids and the ones I know have gone on to regular bikes more easily. We will probably transition him to a bike at 3 years old. And there are no training wheels at all!

We are thinking ahead for LO's second birthday, and she is really excited about having a bike.

I originally thought this might be the way to go:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008AG5VOQ/ref=gno_cart_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It is a 4-1 trike so it converts from a push stroller/trike to an actual independently operated one as LO gets older/stronger/bigger.

But a friend mentioned a balance bike and I am wondering if that is a better idea...any experience or advice?
