We went to a bike store and the strider is for ages 18 months and up. I got the trike used off craigslist and the balance bike was a hand me down so, we're lucky that we didnt spend much for both. My son enjoyed both. He rode the trike mostly after turning 2 and the balance bike after turning 3. But he is not the most adventurous kid which is why it took us a year to convince him to try the balance bike. I feel that the balance bike was a bigger factor in terms of him learning on the real bike though. My daughter is 2 now and can maneuver the bakance bike on her own. We got a yellow color with the idea of handing it down to my DS in mind, and now he's really excited to use it. My DD actually really also liked her trike a lot. It is super low to the ground but the seat is adjustable all the way up to a 5 yr old (you can buy a extended seat) which is great for reuseability. It is instinctual for kids and the ones I know have gone on to regular bikes more easily. We will probably transition him to a bike at 3 years old.
