@Mrs Green Grass: good to know they are adjustable!
@Iced Tea: ahhh the inevitable "carry my bike" situation
@JennyPenny: we considered a trike but our little guy seems like more of a balance bike kid. If it doesn't work out maybe we will try a trike :)
@Kemma: DS is above average like that too, so it's good to have some feedback from you - it makes us think of trying sooner rather than later.
@Pumuckl: thank you for the link! going to check it out for sure.
@winniebee: I haven't even looked at sizes yet but it sounds like we will need to really get the measurements to check DS will be able to touch both feet.

We have a 12 inch one and my son is on the smaller side but at 28 months still can't quite touch both feet to the ground at the same time. He's really coordinated and athletic so I think he'll be able to use it once his feet can actually touch (he got it for his birthday in Dec. and we were hoping he'd be able to use it this summer, and I'm still hopeful that he will).

@kitty: we gave our LOs balance bikes for their 2nd birthdays. Be sure to get one that is light weight and that his inseam measures up with the seat height. My then still 3 year old just took off on his pedal bike a couple of weeks ago because he didn't have to learn to balance.

This site has great information on anything bike related: https://www.twowheelingtots.com/10-distinguishing-features-of-balance-bikes/

My wee guy could ride a mini balance bike by about 20 months and managed to ride a standard size balance bike by about 22 months. He has above average gross motor skills and is good at that sort of stuff plus his sister is good at bike riding.

We got one for DS for his 2nd birthday and 9 months later he still doesn't really get it. He gets frustrated/bored after 5 min on it though so he hasn't had a ton of practice. He's a whiz at the trike he plays with at daycare though.

The height of the seat can vary quite a bit between brands, so make that part of your buying decision. We bought the Cruzee because it was one of the shortest and lightest weight (you will inevitably carry the bike sometimes for LO!). She is above average height at two yet barely reaches the ground with the seat on the lowest setting.

We got it as a second birthday present. She's had it a few weeks and mostly walks with it so far. She is gaining skills with steering and balancing.

We just have a helmet.

You can adjust the seat so height doesn't really matter. My nephew was great with it super early but my son never got the hang of it. We just used helmets and started with slow places and lots of supervision.

We have a very active LO and would love to get him a balance bike soon but not sure when exactly is appropriate.

What age did your LO use a balance bike successfully?
Did your LO have to be tall to reach the ground properly from the seat?
Did you use any other protective gear besides a helmet?

LO is only 19mo right now but very well coordinated, so we were thinking some time around his 2nd bday or a bit before if appropriate. Thanks ☺
