We have a tricycle, my LO hated the balance bike because she wants to peddle like mommy. For her half the fun is peddling and that wasn't possible on the Strider. We plan on getting her a smaller bike with training wheels for her 3rd birthday.

@lovehoneybee: Ah, that's good to hear. I think I'm leaning toward a balance bike at this point. It seems more intuitive for a child to use.

@aprild: No, not really. He scaped his knee one time, but I that's been it. He was more scared than anything (he needed a hug), but got right back on.

@lovehoneybee: Has he ever hurt himself when falling? That's something I'm worried about too.

@sarac: I'm glad she likes her balance bike!

We have a tricycle, but it's mostly a novelty. It's also still a little too big for my smaller 3 year old. Meanwhile, she can go miles on her scoot bike, and I'm running to keep up. I wouldn't have even purchased her a tricycle, it was given to us.

We got E a Kazaam balance bike. (D works in the industry, and it was his decision...he also considered the Strider, and I think the biggest draw for the Kazaam was the foot rest...more like a scooter with a seat).

Compared to the tricycle, he thinks the balance bike is more maneuverable (close turns are easier to make), and he really likes that it teaches balance, which is the hardest part of learning to ride a real bike. He says learning to pedal on the tricycle is nice, but he thinks that's easier to pick up than balancing.

However, I presume the kid is less likely to tumble over on a tricycle (E's fallen 2-3 times), and would probably be better as a toy...D wanted something that would help prepare E to ride big bikes.

ETA: E's never ridden a tricycle but LOVES his balance bike! He wants to go out on it every afternoon!
