We got a balance bike a few weeks ago, DD was 2y2m, and she took to it right away. She does have access to trikes at daycare so she's experiencing both.

DD1 is 2.5 and I know she does balance bike and scooter at school; so we opted for a trike with handles for home.

We gave our son a balance bike for his second birthday and would make the same decision again. At 3.5 his balance is great, and he can go pretty fast and far on it. We're in a city, so have come to rely on it for getting around when we don't want to be stuck with a stroller. We went for the Yedoo Tootoo, and it'll fit him for at least another year, though he'll be ready for a pedal bike sooner.

I also wanted to mention that we do have a trike and my big girl started riding it at around three. She would ride her balance bike up the street and up to preschool but she LOVES "triking" around our back yard!

I wanted my son to ride a balance bike to help him ride a bike later. We got him a scooter first at a lil past 2- he loved it. Got him a strider balance bike at 2.5 and never looked back at his scooter. Think he thinks a bike is a big boy thing and prefers it. We don't have a trike but he likes playing around with his friends' trikes.

My wee guy has been riding a balance bike since he was 18m but he good gross motor skills so at 2y3m he can also ride a two wheel scooter! Personally I would go for a balance bike and bigger trike once he gets older.

I got it used on Amazon (which I was surprised to see was an option).

My 4 year old loved her balance bike starting at about 27 months. Before that she had no interest. She moved to a pedal bike without training wheels when she turned 4. But if you're not interested in early riding (we are really into biking, so wanted that for our kids) I would pick one of the other options. We haven't used any of them but based on seeing kids around the neighborhood, if vote scooter over push trike. I think it's nice to give them a little independence.

We have both, and they're both popular. The trike gets a lot more use, though, I think because he can go further and faster.

@Coral: that's the one! I was lucky to get them on sale. But they are so much easier for kids to ride than cheaper ones and will hold up and still be used for years so a good investment.

I voted other because my 2yo LOVES his micro mini scooter and can go so fast on it. We also have a convertible trike but he doesn't get pedaling yet so I still push the handle. My older one got the trike pedaling around 3. Never tried a balance bike.

My son just turned 2. I don't think there's a right answer but here's our experience. He has access to a balance bike, Radio Flyer trike, and a Chillafish Bunzi. He will not touch the balance bike yet. He gets on the trike and pushes it with his feet on the ground, no pedals. He goes all around the neighborhood will the Chillafish bike.

DS's 2nd birthday is coming up and I am trying to decide between a balance bike and radio flyer with a removable handle. I'm honestly not that concerned with preparing him to ride a bike (I learned the old fashioned way  ) but getting something that will get a lot of use now. DS really doesn't get pushing, pedals, etc yet.
