@hotchildinthecity: hmm...I don't think your balcony is any more dangerous than the road in front of my house. At least if lo gets through one barracade, there's a railing! If my lo got through the front door he would have access to a decently busy (though residential) road. I have to pick my battles about what to worry about...so far the deadbolt puts me at ease ;)

@hotchildinthecity: we have a balcony with similar doors and we haven't done anything special! Lo can't open them and we are of course always out there when he is out there. I wouldn't worry :)

@Mrs. Lion: I'm actually not worried, but I feel like I should be! Like I struggle to open this balcony door. I can't fathom a situation where a 2 year old could muscle it open, and manage to vault himself over the 4-foot railing!

@hotchildinthecity: We just installed one of these small door bolt very high up on our patio/balcony door. LO won't be able to reach it until she's 12-13 probably.

@hotchildinthecity: Woops! I guess I assumed all balconies have sliding doors.

@hotchildinthecity: if you wre worried about it you could secure the door with a chain lock (or something similar) at the top of the door.

@MaryM: Interesting, but I wonder if it would work on a regular swinging door? Mine isn't a slider, it's just a door you use to get into a house.

In my old apartment, we had a stopper like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-Patio-Aluminum-Sliding-Door-Security-Bar-U-9920/100197288

Instead of sitting in the track on the floor, it attaches about waist high (or wherever you want to install it). You lift up the pole to open the door, then you can swing it down and it rests in the "saddle" to lock it.

It's a lot more convenient than the ones that you rest in the track. no bending over! though you do have to make sure it's all the way up when you open the door so it doesn't slide back down to the lock position when you close the door behind you

We moved recently, and we have a balcony in our new apartment. The balcony itself is fairly useless...it's really small and I don't intend on being out there much, especially since we have a full rooftop accessible to us. I have no intention of ever letting my son out there, because we could easily just go play on the rooftop.

The door to the balcony has a lock mechanism on it that requires you to pull the handle up to unlock the deadbolt. It's really hard to do. Additionally, the handle is at about chest height to me.

Is there any other steps we can take to ensure the balcony is safe? We were going to use one of those anti break in door stoppers, but the door has a small step, so it doesn't fit. Thoughts?
