@Foodnerd81: it's for looks. Underwear lines look awful and are distracting, especially in ballet where long lines are the goal. Even if they're not sticking out the side, You can still tell they're under there! At my gymnastics club, it was always emphasized that we need to practice in the same type of gear we would compete in.

I didn't dance as a child, but I danced as a teen (the peak of insecurity) and the girls there that had danced for a long time didn't wear underwear. In an effort to fit in, I learned not to wear underwear, but compensated with dark leotards only (black, navy, etc).

I would be fine with a stated rule for kidswear.

Lines. The underwear creates lines and other non aesthetically pleasing issues. Leotards should be tight so that the instructor can view the body lines and reposition the body as needed. Underwear breaks that up and can require a less well fitted outfit. Obviously this is less of an issue with a younger class.

For younger kids it is really the distraction of the ill fitting panties coming out of the Leo. I can't tell you how many girls leave class with undies bunched like a scrunchie out the side and the Leo up. They try to pull them up and tuck them and hide them.

Yeah, no, I stick with my Ugh. I understand mandating the proper uniform and such, but I can see literally no reason why anyone needs to tell my kid what kind of underwear to wear. I guess I can see mandating no visible underwear, but even that seems bizarre for little kids.

@Foodnerd81: Spandex does have some breath ability to it, as do the tights. I don't know, I find it more comfortable to go without. I hate when it is that time of the month and I have to wear stupid underwear under my tights/capris. I'm a heavy sweater and it just makes things so much worse.

@avivoca: but a preschoolers leotard isn't usually made from fancy breathable material, is it? And they wear tights under it? But is it just to get used to it for later?

Also I wear underwear working out- I just feel so weird without it. Probably because my mom made me wear underwear to ballet class when I was five. :silly:

@Foodnerd81: As an adult, I find it horribly uncomfortable to wear underwear while exercising, so I imagine that it would be worse in a leotard. Plus, those are made from performance fabrics that breath and wick better than cotton underwear.

I had no idea this was a thing before, like, competition age I guess- but I've never given it any thought. But @sandy: that makes sense in terms of dress code- I've seen places where you have to wear black leotard and pink tights or whatever.

But can someone elaborate on why? Is it just for looks, so there's no bunching or showing? Or comfort? I guess wearing underwear under a swimsuit does sound uncomfortable. I took ballet for a few years as a little kid but have no idea what I did. I'm guessing I wore underwear though.

@sandy: totally Agree! We were not allowed to wear underwear during competition unless you were at that puberty age and even then, we were explicitly told which brand and color we were allowed to wear. In gymnastics, underwear showing = points deducted. It's hard for me
To see why no undies at a young age is weird, to me it's the opposite-no undies would be weirder when you're older and have other junk going on downstairs!

@sarac: pretty much any reputable ballet studio taught by professional ballet dancers are going to have a dress code that tells them how to dress during ballet class. Not all dance studios that offer ballet classes will have this. It's not so important when they're little and it's not so serious but it's very common for ballet schools to have this as a stated policy. Just like if your kid wanted to become a competitive swimmer - there will be a certain type of swimsuit required. They can't just show up and swim in a bikini. Some little girls may want to attend a ballet studio with the goal of dancing professionally someday. Just saying - it's not uncommon. Didn't mean to go on and on about this but your "ugh" comment just threw me

I did ballet for a while and we weren't supposed to. It's probably fine to keep the undies with little kids but the extra layer down there can lead to problem since there's not really any breathability. Personally I found it more comfy without undies, anyways.
