@duckduckkristen: Maybe he has only contact allergy with bananas (not sure if this is possible). I believe people who have latex allergy also have reactions to when they are touched with latex gloves, etc. Would definitely ask your pediatrician.

@T-Mom: I've heard about the banana/ latex allergy link. I just find it so odd that LO can eat bananas but they bother his skin!

My DS has not gotten hives, but I suspect that he may have an allergy. He has a horrible reaction to bananas of any form, and he NEVER rejects any kind of food other than bananas. He also dislikes avocados and had a really bad band-aid reaction after a shot. I actually may get him checked for a latex allergy since bananas and avocados apparently have naturally occurring latex, plus the reaction to the band-aid.

I have spoon fed LO bananas at least 10 times and he has never had a reaction. Today I gave him some chunks of banana to let him try to feed himself. Basically he just made a mess and his arms got covered in banana slime! When I went to wipe him off, I noticed his arms were covered in hives where the banana had been on his skin. I called our ped and she said to take him to the ER, but by the time we go there the hives were gone so DH (who is also a doctor) looked at him and said he was fine and the ped in the ER said not to worry either. Anyone else have experience with this? I just think its odd tha he had a contact reaction but has no issues eating bananas.
