Yep, she's just starting flinging her self down now doesn't matter and thinks it's "funny" to hit her head. Give me a heart attack every time I see her try to do it.

DS does this too, but mostly while he's in his car seat. He'll just randomly start throwing his head back into his car seat. What the heck!?

@Cherrybee: My LO totally did this and it also freaked me out! She would do it when she was throwing a tantrum. Sometimes she'd do it hard enough to leave marks on her forehead:(. My ped, as well as several Peds that I call on for work ( I'm a drug rep) all assured me that it's totally normal and is bc they want to express themselves so bad but just don't have the language yet to do it. So that's how they communicate. Mine was saying "I'm super pissed, Mommy!!!"

I didn't ignore it, but I tried not to react to it. I would instead try to distract her from the tantrum. Which I do whether she's banging her head or not. I don't pick her up. I don't give In and soothe her. I distract her with a book, or doing something else, like. "hey, let's go pick out a bow and fix your hair." That usually worked:)

@Cherrybee: It could be a sign of genius! My father found it hilarious, because in one of his stints at a technical facility, he worked with a programmer that used to butt his head against the wall when he couldn't figure out some complex code. My dad said he was brilliant, lol.

@looch: Thanks! :grin:

I've started ignoring it - in fact, I go the whole hog and wordlessly walk away when she does it. She then follows me and I give her attention away from the wall/wardrobe/door. It seems to be working so it must have been an attention thing - she knew that it got my immediate attention when she did it!!! Little tinker!

B does it all the time.( She's 13 months.) She always does it in her high chair and has since she was quite young. She's recently started doing it on walls and even in the bath. She thinks it's funny.

Yep. One time he did it unconsciously, and when we showed a sign of concern, he did it again and laughed. and then again. I think it's totally normal and a spacial thing. They're learning that they need to be mindful of what's around their head. Ever since he started doing that, he will duck under things and put his head down if he walks under the table.

Normal. I think my LO likes the sound and the fact that we both immediately pay attention to him.

He bangs his head on lots of things when he wAnts me to pick him up and I won't. He's 18 months. I think he thinks if he's hurt I'll feel bad and pick him up. I was disturbed at first...

DD has sometimes hit her head back against the wall while sitting in her high chair. I also had a friend with a 2 year old son that went through a phase of banging his head on the wall.

Normal. DS2 (10 months) does it every once in awhile. DS1 (3) did it intermittently, sometimes in frustration before he had words to express himself.

E is 14 months and has recently started banging her head off of walls and the like. She will sit up against a wall and throw her head back over and over again. This evening she was fully headbutting the wardrobe over and over; it was making an echoey sound and I figured she liked that..... but then I put her to bed and she started headbutting the cot bars.

Normal developmental stage? Or is my child quite disturbed??
