We're planning a trip to the NL and Paris this spring (LO will be about 20 months). We haven't traveled internationally with LO yet, but do a fair amount of "local" travel and traveled a bit internationally before he was born. For Paris we plan on bringing a carrier and an umbrella stroller (which we need to buy). I've heard high chairs are virtually impossible to find at restaurants in Paris so we may buy one of those fabric My Little Seats that attach to most chairs. Having a place with 2 bedrooms is pretty essential to us, otherwise sleeping is hard. I love staying in the Marais in Paris so we'll probably look for a 2 bd place there.

@miramira: I'll second that! And LO can touch all the mosaics! In Paris, I recommend La Defense if you like strolling and looking around, there are no cars allowed in the main plaza and a lot of walking space and interesting modern buildings. And of course the entire area in the center of the city - very walkable and lots of landmarks close together.

Thanks everyone! Booking our train ticket today for getting between the two cities.

@MrsBananaGrabber: Great tip about the pass - that will be perfect for a low stress way to see things with LO!

@lamariniere: no worries on the dryer, I'm pretty sure it will be hot enough there it will be no problem! I studied abroad in Rome so I have a decent idea of what to expect. I'm actively working on LO's passport (it's going to be so cute!) and DH and I are up to date. We went to Thailand for our babymoon (accidentally, tickets booked before the BFP!) so we're set there.

@miramira: @regberadaisy: @gracecat: Great recs, thanks!!

Love Paris and Barcelona!

The metro is super easy to use to get almost everywhere. It can sometimes be crowded depending on the time and the line, so be aware of that risk every time you use it. Depending on how much sightseeing you plan to do, I would most likely recommend getting the Paris museum pass. You can get it for 2, 4, or 6 days, and it includes a lot of attractions. The nice thing about it (especially with a baby!) is that you might go to a lot of attractions you otherwise might have missed, but definitely won't feel guilty if you don't spend much time there because it was included in the price of the pass. Plus, you don't have to wait in line for tickets.

@regberadaisy: is right, most places are not going to have dryers.

Don't forget to get a passport if you haven't already gotten it.

In Barcelona we stayed in the Eixample neighborhood, but there are tons of cute neighborhoods. People really do not even think about dinner until way later than we were ever out with LOs, but restaurants are open starting around 8 pm, so you could have an early dinner if your LO won't deal well with being out for a late dinner. I took the metro a few times but found the bus to be more convenient with a stroller. Babywearing is definitely a good idea for visiting Monjuic and Parc Guell.

In Paris, any neighborhoods in districts 1-8 are going to be right in the middle of everything. Districts 11 and 12 are cute and trendy, and I always loved the 18th in and around Montmartre. The Paris metro gets HOT in the summer, so I would try to take the bus.

Some things in both cities is that are hard to find are high chairs and baby change station in bathrooms. Since it will be summer, I would just look for a park bench. I'm picky about having my LOs eat organic baby food and it was harder to find in Spain than in France (in Paris go to Monoprix or organic grocery stores for the best selection). Feel free to wall me if you have specific questions, I lived in Paris for 4 years, so I know it pretty well. :happy:

Make sure to visit Parc Güell in Barcelona. It's beautiful on a quiet morning. Take advantage of the metro in both cities for transport.

How fun! I will look up the link tomorrow but we stayed at this great little one bedroom apartment in Paris. It was right by the moulin rouge and walking distance to sacred couer. Lots of food right on the same block, a small mart across the street. The metro was right across the street and this awesome bakery right at the corner. There is a small washer in the kitchen but no dryer. I think a dryer is uncommon due to space. There is the cutest little terrace with a amazing view of the Eiffel tower. One of our best honeymoon memories is sitting on that terrace after a day of sightseeing, drinking some wine and snacking on cheese and cold cuts from the mart across the street.

We stayed at a nice "bed and breakfast" in Barcelona. But it might not be what you're looking for. I don't think there was a washer as it was our last stop. But I'll dig up the neighborhood because again it was walking distance to the metro and to some great food nearby.

This place, Apartments Marina, we stayed in Barcelona is an apartment style housing, and has a kitchen, bathroom, separate bedrooms and some appliances. Honestly it's been a while and we didn't have a baby at the time but it came to mind as an affordable place with separate bedrooms and living room. But you do need some of your own things, i.e. they don't provide dishwash soap, among other things. But there's a supermarket nearby. It's location was nice, right by Sagrada Familia if I remember correctly. Here's the link on Trip Advisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187497-d503258-Reviews-Apartaments_Marina-Barcelona_Catalonia.html

We booked tickets so it's official! A week each in Barcelona and Paris with LO, who will be about 9.5 months at the time. I'm looking into vacation rentals through VRBO for each week and we'll take the train in between.

Any advice on areas that are LO friendly (although at 9.5 mo I suppose it's not too crucial) and easy public transport (we're not going to bring her car seat)? We plan on baby wearing and not bringing a stroller unless she decides to hate baby wearing by then (unlikely!). I'm trying to find rentals that are one bedroom with a patio/terrace, so we have a space to be when she's napping or her early bedtime. Also bonus to have a washer since I hate hand washing and we'll be there 2 week!

I basically know nothing about either city, and DH has been but was young so doesn't remember much. We're going to do super low key sightseeing, with low expectations for LO's first international trip! We'll be doing a cross country flight the month prior, so we'll have a good idea how flying goes, eek!
