I don't think you should provide previous income; and I don't think you should underevaluate your salary range because of being laid off--

@regberadaisy: If you have to put down a number, I'd do what the article says and put down what your total compensation was at previous jobs. Include your bonus, health plan, stock, etc.

I agree with @caffeinated: if the company knows that you are currently laid off then yes it does affect you, because they know you need them and they dont have to compete with another company for you. It sucks but its true.

@travelingbrit: oooh good idea! Never thought to do a range. I hate having to write down a salary request.

@sunny: Not sure if I can get away from it. They have it on their application AND they tell you to indicate it on the careers page.

@caffeinated: nope, you are totally fine. :)

The application also asks for salaries at previous jobs. I kinda want to leave it blank. I don't really think it's their business. And if I do fill it in they have no way of finding out, right? I mean they can obviously ask my previous employer but I don't know why they will tell?

Hope my comment didn't sound too harsh! The restructuring part won't hurt your chances of landing the job. In this economy, it's very understandable. But in the end, the company may feel that they don't have to offer extra in order for you to accept their offer unless there's a competing offer from a different company. The situation sucks, i know. :(

Do you have to discuss salary right away? I prefer discussing after you've already landed the job.

I like the wording this guy uses here:

http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/on-refusing-to-disclose-your-salary-in-a-job-interview/

You definitely don't have to give up bargaining power just because you were laid off.
I would make sure to put a range based on the average salary for that position in the area. If the average salary is 50K, I would ask for 45-60K for example.

Yes, you definitely lose bargaining power if 1) you don't have a job, or 2) you are in a contract position applying for permanent one. I'm assuming you will be using your previous employer as a reference? In that case, i think the fact that you were laid off will come up. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if it's because of restructuring...the company you're applying to will have the upper hand since you have no leverage.

Sorry to hear about the layoffs. I hope you find something soon!

I hate when companies require you to include a salary requirement - it's not like they share the salary range for the position they're interviewing for!
I would go off of what is a standard salary for that position in your area and your years of expertise. If you can get more - great! If not, at least you have some negotiating room that may at least get you what you were being paid before.

And restructuring is a great explanation.

Do you think one loses salary bargaining power while interviewing after being laid off or it doesn't matter?

One of the firms I will be applying to are asking for a salary requirement. I'm thinking of asking more than what I was currently making. The thought being a) there was a year where a raise was skipped. And b) I think you always get paid more for the job you do at a new job vs your current job. And yes I plan to reference salary.com.

I don't plan to bring up being laid off unless they ask. Then I will say something along the lines of firm restructuring and staff being cut so they know I was not the only one cut.

Thoughts?
