No real solid advice, but based on what you have tried already, have you brought in any outside help for perhaps any ideas? If not, the collar as others have mentioned does come to mind. Don't like the idea, but thinking as a Mom my baby comes first and sleep is so precious, so I get that.

I run agility with my dog (who wouldn't bark if you paid him) and Shelties are a very common breed at agility trials and I always laugh as they bark every step they take through the course and I always wonder if they are like that at home, personally I couldn't imagine handling it, so kudos to you for trying all you have done and still looking for a resolution!!

I don't have advice, but I can commiserate. One of our yorkies is the yappiest yapper of all times. We've tried EVERYTHING. C is a crappy sleeper too, so when her shriek-bark wakes him up after I spend 2 hours getting him to sleep I about lose my mind.

First--I'm really sorry you're dealing with this! No judgement here.

Barking is really hard to break. Certain dogs are hard wired to be barkers, and it's a rewarding behavior. I have heard that if you can teach your dog to speak, that is the building step to teaching them quiet. With that said, it hasn't worked for me!

I would look into a bark collar, and I'm very much pro positive trainer. You can read up on how to use it properly.

My mom has a sheltie and we have been dogsitting her this week. She is such a sweet girl, but has the same loud, constant, abrasive bark. Have you tried a thundercoat with him? That helps somewhat with my mom's dog. Have you asked the vet for suggestions? Good luck!

I grew up with a beagle... I get it! She even learned that the bark collar would stop barking if she just kept barking (a safety thing so they don't get shocked too much), so she's just bark through it. I would try the a bark collar though. And then maybe a trainer could help? The Sit Means Sit guys did wonders for a friend of mine when she was desperate after her baby was born, maybe you could look to see if one is in your area (it's kind of a franchise type deal, so they are everywhere)? Good luck!

Don't have a sheltie but a boxer mix and she will bark at any noise outside. We live in townhomes so the neighbors are literally right next to us, so it's impossible to keep her from seeing or hearing them. The only thing that will keep her quiet is closing the blinds and keeping the TV on so she can't hear or see. She has such a loud bark that it makes me jump when I'm not expecting it. So I totally feel your pain. :-/

Not sure if you want to hear this but the bark collar did work for my parents dog. And he learned really quick not to bark. If I were you I would give it a try. Good luck!

not that i'm glad you all have a barker, too, but I'm glad I'm not the only one! I thought I was for sure doing something wrong. We've done everything the trainer told us to do, haha.

I asked this on facebook, too, and people are recommending the bark collars - saying that you only have to use it once or twice and they "get" it.

Shelties are notorious shelter dogs...because they are talkers by nature so people give them up all the time. (ETA: That's what our shelter told us.) I can only commiserate, because the dog in my avatar is part Sheltie, part German Shepherd. And he barks like a maniac. My dream is to send him to a professional dog trainer. Maybe some day!

I can only commiserate. I have a 5 year old sheltie and we have up on the barking personally. But we have a house with no neighbor on one side. And he is good during the day when we are gone. We do agility with ours but it is only once a week. If we get to it we will get a shock collar.

Not sure i can offer advice on how to fix it but I know dogs have different barks based on what they are feeling. When my dog sees another dog running through the yard, he barks at it like a maniac! Yapping and all, trying to get its attention. Then when he sees a human or hears a noise he thinks is strange, he has an alert bark. He will howl and growl a little bit. The second type of bark is what you want to encourage and discourage the first type. It's important to know which type of bark you're discouraging or else the dog can get confused.

I've heard some people say they trained their dog to "speak" and bark on command and that helped control the dog's out of control barking. I don't know how true that is, because I haven't tried it. Maybe it's worth looking in to!

My dog sits on the back of the couch and barks at dogs, rabbits, birds, etc. Weve tried making him get down, putting him in time out, giving him a little smack to shock him out of it...and nothing. So I'm kind of in the same boat!

okay, dog lovers. I'm at my wits end here. if you're going to judge, skip the commenting. I'm trying to be as honest as possible here to get some help.

I'm tired of hearing that a tired dog is a good dog, because guess what - here, it's not. for whatever reason. he doesn't follow the dog "rules."

anyway, I cannot take the barking anymore. he is a 4 year old sheltie. we've tried everything - citronella bark collars, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, standing over him, making noise to startle him, treats, toys, you name it, we have tried it. going on 2 years here of nuisance barking.

we live in a duplex, my inlaws are on the other side, they have a boxer. that barks a LOT. my dog generally follows suit and barks at things their dog barks at - on his own, if that dog is quiet, he only barks if people knock on the door or if my in-laws come home.

I think he barks at my in-laws coming home or if they're outside because they let him come over and play, so maybe he thinks they are his "people" too? the only thing I have left that I think could be the issue is if he needs a "job" to do instead of barking at everything. the job cannot be hiding and finding treats, unfortunately, because his vet has him on a diet now (it never ends).

I am at the end of my patience with him and I feel awful. But if you've spent hours trying to get a child to sleep, and ONE bark (that is so high pitched it goes right through you/makes you jump out of your skin) wakes her up, every day and/or night for almost a year straight, you wouldn't have much affection or patience left either

I know his barking is good if someone broke in - what I want is for him to LISTEN to me and STOP when I say "quiet" ...or something!!! and he just barks right at me when I try to stop him, as if swearing at me.

someone help me!
