@JennyPenny: in that last picture, are you saying doors that slide back into the entire pantry like that? That would be awesome in my opinion. I know I’d probably leave them open a lot of the times but they wouldn’t be in the way and we could close them when we want to look nice.

I’m also in camp barn doors will be dated soon. And not the same, but we have sliding closet doors that my kids just will. Not. Leave. Alone. It’s a lot easier to put a pinch guard on a regular door. But my kids are just freakishly obsessed with doors in general.

We have a bunch of spots in my house where open doors bang into each other so I feel you on how annoying that is. But I also feel like opening a cabinet is so much easier than opening a full barn door.

I like the look but I think it would drive me crazy. When I need something from the pantry I want to get in and out fast.

I also think doors like this would be really cool but I know we'd sacrifice quite a bit of pantry space for them :-/

We would probably try to keep them looking less barn-like. So still painted white like the rest of our kitchen doors/cabinets and minimal hardware. The cumbersome part is what we were most worried about and it sounds like that is a valid concern :-/ I guess its just a matter of whether its more annoying to have to move the doors when we need to (not really sure how often that will be) or have to always open/close traditional doors to get to the microwave.

We have a barn door for our master bathroom and generally leave it open but it’s kind of annoying to close if you were doing it all the time. And while I like ours, they are becoming dated to me.

I think barn doors are trendy and cumbersome. Also, they can be kinda loud sliding along. We open ours dozens and dozens of times a day and that's not including the prob 10 times we use the microwave. I'd get something more classic and easier to constantly open.

I love barn doors, but a friend had them installed and her kids have pinched their fingers more than once. There is also no locking mechanism to keep kids from playing with them (though maybe you could install a hook?). For those reasons, we plan on doing pocket doors instead. We’ll be using a natural wood door that looks rustic (not a plain white one).

@annem1990: agreed.

Unless your husband is super handy and can install himself, I wouldn’t want to pay to have something so obviously trendy in what I
consider to be my main entertaining area.

Also T would leave them open constantly and bang them together. Would drive me nuts.

We have a barn door on our laundry room. I think barn doors are great, but I think barn doors (and pocket doors for that matter) should only be used where you don't plan to open/close them often. They're noisy and cumbersome.

I really like pocket doors myself, but we don't have the wall space to do that on the sides. So it'd have to be something like this - where they pocket into one another. Kind of like the barn doors work but in the frame instead of on top.

I think barn doors are going to look dated quickly - but LOVE the look of the built in cabinet on your second photo - that will always look good!

Also like the suggestion above for pocket doors.

I agree they look wonderful. But it would drive me crazy if people don't close them properly. Also the items right behind where the two doors meet would be frustrating to access maybe?

What about a pocket door? I like the look of Barn doors, but I feel like they could go out of style quickly. A classic-looking pocket door could be a good solution.

I know they are "in" right now which is influencing my vote, but I like barn doors for easy access. We can't have the Tupperware drawer and the dishwasher open at the same time so I get not wanting things that open into each other.

DH and I are doing a small kitchen reno that will have us moving our microwave into the pantry. I want to take it a step further and make a really nice pantry with drawers and things, but I think it would be inconvenient with our current double door pantry. The doors currently open up into another door on one side and the fridge on the other, so they don't get all the way "out of the way" for drawers to work nicely. I think a barn door would be a nice solution. We'd have to get the kind where only one side could be open at a time, but I think if it looked nice enough we could keep one side open most of the time which would be convenient for the microwave. DH thinks barn doors for a pantry would absolutely be annoying and a no go. So I was hoping to hear from people who have any experience with barn doors - positive or negative. Would you do barn doors for a pantry?

(inspiration pics - barn style pantry doors and the kind of interior I hope to accomplish)
