@meredithNYC: I don't think your work will go to waste! I did Bar Method and similar workouts through my entire pregnancy and then stopped for literally 6 months. I just did a workout yesterday for the first time in months and I am in better shape than I thought I would be! I am really glad I stuck with my workouts through the pregnancy.

@gingerblonde: Losing weight took me a long time, but I was battling PPD and just couldn't get it together. I was depressed and eating a lot, unfortunately. But I think if you have managed to exercise this far into your pregnancy, you should be okay! Honestly, I think it's a lot about laying the groundwork w/ making exercise a habit, you know? You will probably be excited to get back to it, since after you have had a baby you kind of need those things that make you feel like your old self, you know?

@Freckles: Oh my God, the flat butt!!! Mine was so big and SO flat after baby. I remember seeing my reflection in a window when I was walking to an appointment w/ the pediatrician and being absolutely horrified!!!

@meredithNYC: I think you can definitely keep it up during your pregnancy, especially since you've been doing it for 4 months now. I do think you need to be careful with the ab work (i had diastasis with my first) but that shouldn't prevent you from continuing on. I think continuing with exercise during pregnancy is important, especially in the first trimester when nausea makes it so easy to pile on the carbs. It'll definitely help battle flat-butt syndrome post partum. :silly:

@meredithNYC: To be completely honest with you, I gained a ton of weight this pregnancy, even though I stuck with it. I didn't go very often during the late first/early second tri, because I had migraines. I literally ballooned up, so I got motivated to go to try to mitigate the weight gain. It didn't work at all, and I have gained almost 60 pounds in this pregnancy to date, but I will say that my muscles still feel strong and I think it really helped with pelvic and back pain. I plan to jump back to class as soon as I have the green light after LO is born.

How did it go losing weight PP from your first pregnancy? I am trying to get my plan of action together.

@Freckles: @gingerblonde: Good for you guys for sticking with it!

It's crazy - I really just started doing it seriously about 4 months ago. I knew I was going to TTC this summer all along but I was determined to get in the best shape possible before getting pregnant again. So while I will be sad to see my hard-earned core work waste away, hopefully I can do enough to sort of maintain, you know? I did NOTHING with my first pregnancy, gained a ton of weight/was majorly out of shape and learned the hard way that you can't just let yourself go like that! :(

I did Barre3 at least twice a week until two weeks ago when I hit 35 weeks.

I was able to get the benefits by doing most floor work at the barre. I have SPD so getting up and down wasn't a good idea, and obviously the core and twisting shouldn't be done as you get further along.

I did work on transverse abs and do kegels utilizing the ball - either under my lower back or between my thighs. I think that will be helpful for labor, but didn't require the more serious ab work that the rest of the class was doing.

@meredithNYC: I'm in my first tri and i've continued to do my barre classes (no modifications). I definitely drink a lot more water! I started doing barre classes about 3 weeks before i got pregnant so i figured i was fine to continue.

For those of you ladies who did barre pre-pregnancy and while pregnant, have you gone back after having your babies? If so, how has it been?

I'm mildly obsessed with barre and I'm TTC #2 this summer. I'm not only worried about being able to do it during pregnancy, but I'm also (totally prematurely, lol!) worried about having to start all over post-pregnancy. I'm finally to the place where I feel like I'm "good" at it and I dread going back to square one.

I am in the minority I guess...I went 2 or 3 times after finding out and then quit! There definitely were a couple of pregnant people in my classes but it didn't feel right to me. I was worried about hurting the baby [which is totally NOT based on research or doctor, just my own crazy FTM fears], and I didn't feel like I was getting my money's worth anymore with all the modifications and rest breaks I thought I needed. I'm excited to go back when I can give it 100% again though!

@fuzzypeaches: I've done Bar Method regularly for the past two years and was in the same position. I didn't want to tell too early because of friends in the class. When I did end up telling them at 10 weeks, they didn't have me modify any ab exercises. They said most of the ab exercises didn't need to be modified till 20 weeks.

@fuzzypeaches: Yes i did :) One of my instructors was all excited to know before everyone else. And said there were a TON of 1st tri ladies in the classes that you couldn't see yet were preggo. My studio also keeps a list of the preggos so the teachers know, but I just made sure to tell all of them. I think they also released some pregnancy modifications? Let me see if i can find it online..

ETA: there is a pure barre prenatal DVD.. but you might as well just as your teacher for mods. :)

Thanks ladies!!! I love that barre is do popular now!! I have kind of a dumb question - did you just pull the instructor aside and tell her privately? I'm just worried bc I take barre with friends of mine who don't know yet! But I don't want that to get in the way of an awesome workout :)

I did Dailey Method all throughout my pregnancy and did core work til the end (with major modifications!). It's a great workout for pregnancy and I'm positive my labor, delivery and recovery were so easy because of it! Tell your instructors that you're pregnant and they can watch out for you!

Barre is GREAT for pregnancy. I've done it basically the entire time, and now that I have to quit CF, will be doing it more (I've been doing it on the weekends and CF during the week). I have to lay off the ab work because of my diastasis but the isometric movement, light weights, small range of motion, low intensity workouts are perfect.

I am doing BarreAmped right now in my first trimester. The instructors should be able to give you modifications. I take more breaks and modify the ab exercises. They also told me to release my abs every 10 seconds and to never tuck my pelvis.

I did pilates and barre workouts (Bar Method) throughout my entire pregnancy. Twisting is a no-no as are pulsing abdominal crunches. Make sure you tell the instructor you are pregnant and they should be able to help you modify. Otherwise I think it's a great low-impact way to stay healthy while pregnant!

I didn't do barre, but I did a good deal of pilates. You should be fine, at least until the second semester . . . the goal being to avoid laying on your back so as to avoid drops in blood pressure. You should definitely not do (traditional-crunch) ab exercises during your third tri, though, to avoid diastasis.

Hi ladies! I'm hoping somebody has experience with this. I love my barre classes, but for those of you who are familiar, there is quite a bit of an and core work, that's hard even without pregnancy!

I'm still really early, and obviously way too early to switch to the prenatal barre class, but I worry that the ab work in the regular class might be harmful?

Has anyone done barre in the first trimester?

Thanks in advance!
