Haha I feel like I'm a novice when it comes to my daughter's hair as its curly and mine is dead straight! I suggest a lot of hair oil and only combing it when it's wet/damp, gently!!

@MamaG: We're the same - food, playdough, sunscreen get in her hair, so we wash it all (it's also not that long).

I haven't read other comments so I'll just say some things I know! I have really long tangle-prone hair.

A boar bristle brush starting at the bottom. Then a paddle brush that is a combo- it has natural bristles and paddle brush style. Same thing, I brush starting at the bottom. I started using some argan oil and brush it through. I brush really well before washing.

With shampoo I leave the hair falling naturally and go in delicate sections around the roots, working down the scalp. No bunching while scrubbing- this means knots. I read somewhere to treat the hair like delicate silk, try to avoid any ripping or tearing or scrunching to lead to tangles. After rinsing I use a heavy conditioner that says leave on 10 minutes. I start at the bottom and gently work into hair (not scalp) with fingers so that all tangles are gently worked through.

After shower gently squeeze hair with towel. Use boar bristle brush gently starting at bottom. Then use combo brush. No tangles! Then I put it in a braid.

If hair is getting tangle-prone in general during the day it usually means I need a trim and layers help a lot!

I also leave the hair in a natural part throughout the process- not brushed back or anything- that is asking for tangles!

@mrbee: Never heard of this before! But then again, LO and I have a different type of hair so these shampoo/conditioner rules don't really apply.

@MamaG: I also still wash all of my LO's hair for the same reason - she manages to get food in her hair or whatever else she's got on her hands. Plus she goes to daycare and I just feel like an all over wash is warranted.

In addition to the other comments, when brushing/combing; work your way from the ends up and do it in sections that you hold tight in one hand while you comb with the other so that you don’t pull your daughter’s hair.

I have very long hair (butt length) and I wash only the roots with shampoo. Then I condition only the "ends" (which I consider anything from my neck on) and leave it in for a few minutes before washing it out. I only condition my roots if my hair is really dry (like it was after all the sun and ocean in Mexico). With long hair in general you have to try to be careful not to create too many tangles... so washing gently and drying gently is a must.

When I do bath/shower for our daughter, I wash her hair (all of it) she tends to have things like yogurt in it. I also find it challenging to do just the roots. I do condition about half way up her hair. I also tend to leave the conditioner sit on her hair while we wash her body (she does about half of the scrubbing on her own). Rinse, gentle dry with a towel and comb.

We try not to put her to bed with wet hair. And if we do, I tend to braid it first so that it doesn't get too knotted but braids make for an interesting look the next day.

My only advice would be to NOT scrub her hair like you do when you wash yours - assuming all men do it that way!

My DH scrubs my DD's hair with such force that no matter what I do after her bath the hair looks horrible! I had to show him how to gently wash her hair. She has fine hair though so maybe that's the issue!

With my hair (thick, wavy, long), I wash the roots with shampoo, rinse out, then condition everything except the roots, comb while conditioner is still in there, then rinse out. Then towel dry GENTLY so that it doesn't tangle again and let it air dry!

I'll also often put it up with a hair clip so that the ends don't soak the back of my shirt, and then I'll take it down about an hour later to let the rest of it dry.

@mrbee: oh I had no idea you're only supposed to shampoo the roots. I should tell my husband- he does bathtime for our daughter, too.

He usually washes her hair with shampoo (California baby) and then towel dries, sprays leave in detangler (California baby) and combs it out. Her hair is very fine and soft, and so far this routine is working for us.

I have long hair and I condition all of it. The texture will be off if I don't condition it all. One "rule" would be to only comb wet hair. Brushes will pull too much and cause breakage.

I've been doing bathtime for a while, which kind of puts me in charge of our daughter's hair (a scary thought).

I started reading online about taking care of girls' hair, and discovered that you're only supposed to shampoo the roots and condition the ends. I had been shampooing and conditioning everything, oops! I'm more careful now, and bathtime also takes less time. *fist pump*

What are some other "rules" of taking care of longer hair? Any tips would be appreciated! I'm starting from scratch over here...
