@Foodnerd81: I really think I’ll do January party next year! Only issue is my sister lives out of state so she won’t be around.

@looch: yes! See since my son is just turning 3, I kind of feel like I want to start a precedent of how’s it going to go, knowing of course it may change when he realizes more what is normal etc.

@misolee: I like that idea for opening the presents slowly. And what s great idea to have a surprise party a month early!

@skipra: very sentimental here! So even if we do gifts on
His party day, I’ll be making it special some other way on the real bday! Very good point about this celebration being about his birth and entrance into our family.

My son's birthday is a few days before Christmas and let me just say that he's pretty clear on what he wants. He's 7 this year and there would be no way I could get away with giving him presents or having a party on a day that didn't work for him.

At some point, they know when their birthdays are and you'll have a lot less flexibility.

Since he would be getting presents from his friends at the party, I think you can save yours for his actual birthday. I would do something fun like cake and balloons on his actual birthday. But yea.. that's a lot of presents all at once. My daughter had her bday party in October and I told her she could open all her presents on that day and then actually open the packaging and play with it once a week. It helped her look forward to "using" the gifts and I wasn't overwhelmed with bunch of different parts everywhere.

My birthday is 4 days before Christmas so yea..December bdays :meh: When I was in college, my friends threw me a surprise party...in November.

We don't even have birthdays around Christmas but I still struggle with gifts and celebrations turning it into a birth month or weeks vs. a birthday. When my oldest was little I was firm that we would have one celebration and that was it but it never works out that way. No matter what, we always do cake and our immediate family presents on the actual day. Although it is a celebration for your LO, it is also a celebration for your family as the day you welcomed your LO into it. I am very sentimental about acknowledging and celebrating the actual real birthday though so if you're not, just go with the friend party and leave it at that.

I think I would do the celebration on the party day. Gifts too, unless there was one fun exciting gift that would really stick out (like my daughter is getting plenty of fun things but is getting a big doll house that would be extra fun to open on her bday. And then yeah, I feel like a January party would be more fun since it’s something to look forward to after the holidays.

That said my younger daughters is actually the 17th and it still feels too close to Christmas. Maybe I will use your January bday party idea. She won’t be having a party this year anyway (she’s two and doesn’t know any better) but we are going to a Christmas party on her bday.

My son’s bday is December 28, but we are having his party on the 17 so friends can actually come (I didn’t think would care about this for years to come, and was planning to stick with family parties, but he went to so many preschool parties he’s been talking about his birthday all year!). It’s already tough having this gift extravaganza of Christmas and birthday, should I just give him his birthday gifts and celebrate on the party day? Otherwise it’s 3 days of presents... even though I said no gifts, I am sure he’ll get some. Maybe just have a fun dinner he likes and cake on his real bday ? I think maybe In the future we’ll have his party in January.
