Check the rules for the particular beach you plan to go to - I'm in NJ (did not grow up here) and have learned that in our state, the beaches each have their individual rules. Turns out a bunch of them prohibit tents other than baby tents! Not sure how it is where you are but the decision might be made for you based on your destination.

I would go with tent - I find umbrellas are hard to get to stay upright and you need to worry about wind a lot more.

I prefer a tent. I got a decent one from Target for like $20 on clearance a few years ago and have used it a few times at the beach and at a park. It has a "tarp" that can be used as a bottom if needed but like at the beach it provides a lot of shade so that the kids can play in the sand but be shaded. You do need two people to put it up and put it down but it's not hard.

Anyone have any recs on beach umbrellas versus tents? We're heading to the beach next week and need to decide which one we want. Thanks!
