Hat, long sleeved rash guard, baby pool and sand toys! That's all my DD needed at 18 months and she had a blast!!! We had a tent she never stayed in.

When we went to Hawaii when my son was 13 months old we put him in a longsleeve hoodie rash guard (kept the son off his neck better). It was a onesie style with snaps at the crotch so I put him in a swim diap and then thin leggings. The leggings gave extra sun protection and I didn't have to worry about scraping or irritating his knees while he rolled around the sand. We had sandals but they were hit and miss. We took some cheap stacking cups, a shovel, and a some plastic books, like the kind for the bath, and stored them in a gallon size Ziploc bag. Keep water on hand - they get thirsty and eat a lot of sand. Watch out for cig butts and stuff like that in the sand - they always want to pick it up.

Super useful is BABY POWDER. Just cover your naked baby in it and it will help get all the sand off as the powder dries everything up. Just brush the sand off and then rinse them off quickly and throw them in clean clothes.

Agree with sun protection. Since big floppy SPF hat, sunscreen, rash guards, maybe even a beach tent with a bottom. My lo is 17m and still putting stuff in her mouth. Plans to head out before it gets too hot and go back later in the day.

I'm jealous! I haven't been to a beach in 5 years.

My main thing is sun protection. I like long sleeve rash guards but have a hard time finding them for some reason (unless I turn to more expensive brands). We did a beach vacation right before my youngest turned two. The only beach toys we brought were a set of cheap plastic stacking cups and one mini shovel for each kid. That was perfect since they barely took up any room in our luggage. We ended up losing a few of the cups, but didn't care since they were so cheap.

What do I need to know about heading to the beach with my LO? Any great tips?

We are heading to the Florida panhandle in May (off peak) and our littlest will be 18 months at the time. We didn't take our older until she was closer to 3.
