@mediagirl: Agree, I dont make a big stink about a long sleeve rash guard versus a short sleeve one. I can deal with applying sunscreen on her arms. Its better than a swim suit that doesn't cover anything (torso, shoulders, neck, etc).

We have a target long sleeve rash guard that my daughter wore in FL all last summer. Never had an issue with over heating. They also sell sets now that include a normal swim suit and a rash guard. Maybe something like that so she could take the top off if needed? Honestly they stay really cool especially if you get wet every once in a while.

The bigger concern I have for my kids is eye protection. I ask that they wear either a hat or sun glasses. Maybe think about something that fits her well that she would prefer. Remember if you part her hair, the scalp has a tendency to burn. Wear a hat or spray sunscreen.

@Mrs. Carrot: I think white rashguards really help reflect light and keep cool. If it's not *hot* outside and my oldest wears her white rash guard, she will be shivering after she's wet.

Getting it wet is also key.

If you get the rash guard wet it feels cool on the skin, it's not at all hot like if you were wearing a long sleeve cotton tee.

I live in the area and it is just so freaking hot and HUMID that time of year. Nearly unbearable IMO. I would do short sleeve rash guard, try to get beach time in the early morning, then stay inside for lunch and afternoon, do some indoor things. Also it usually rains in the afternoon or even in the morning. Summer is definitely a rainy season. Hollywood beach is nice though!

We live in south Florida and I put my kids in long sleeve rash guards. My kids run hot but they are super fair skinned. They don't seem hot in the rash guards at all. They get a little wet and I think it then helps keep them coooler as they play in the sand cause the fabric is still damp. Lots of people don't do rash guards down here though. Whatever you are comfortable with will be ok as long as you keep up with sunscreen.

@Mrs. Carrot: yeah, we had one last year. I haven't found a good one that she will wear this year. We got short sleeve ones for this year and honestly I think it will be enough. We just reapply the sunscreen on her arms. Just having her torso covered is the biggie for me.

We live in the south and have been to Florida in the dead of the summer with a very fair child (who also overheats). We do a rash guard with regular swim bottoms. Reapply sunscreen every hour or half hour if she is in the water. We use an umbrella for shade and make her sit under it for snacktime. They always want snacks when at the beach. :)

We're going to Florida for 4th of July to visit some friends (Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale area), and planning to spend time at the beach there. My 4 year old loves playing in the sand more than anything and we already do sunscreen and staying out of the sun in peak hours, but I want to be mindful of the much stronger sun/heat than what she's used to. My friend sent me a picture of her son and he's in a full body rash guard, so I'm wondering if I need to get more coverage for my kid as well, but don't want her to overheat either (and she's very prone to overheating). She's got darker skin so she doesn't burn easily so I'd love some tips on what works well. Thanks!
