@HabesBabe: :) I made another one in a random Indian fabric I bought like 15 years ago. The one I batiked looks terrible so I didn't finish it.
The teething pads look pretty cool though.
If you go with no teething pads it's really no big--I think a receiving blanket might be more convenient than a prefold.

You going to do an orange hood? Or khaki?

Also... do you need it to attach at the bottom?

I'm gonna try to make it and I'll let you know if I fail :)

I switched to the hook/eye clasps instead of bobby pins. It means I did have to sew the hook directly to the carrier...

The process for the easier hood:
1. clip placement ideas:
[attach=741/12/mbjlna.600x337.beco-05-placement-for-clips.JPG]
2. cut your fabric: (16" wide by 12" or more long depending on your height. I am 5'0")
[attach=741/12/mbjlnc.600x337.beco-06-cut-t-shirt.JPG]

3. hemming tape or sew a hem or use fabric that needs no hem
[attach=741/12/mbjlne.600x337.beco-09-nats-part-2.JPG]
4. sew on your clip or hook/eye or whatever clasp of choice
That's it!

Ok.... still working on the "matching" black one--it doesn't look as cool or as batik as I wanted.

Here is my Nationals hood--made from a 16" wide by 12" long (you could do longer) piece of a T-shirt--the same T-shirt I cut up for the fabric for the black hood.

I simply folded the iron on hem tape in half down the vertical sides and folded a mini hem and hemmed the "right side" instead of the "wrong side" (you usually aren't supposed to see the hem tape!).

Then I just glued on the bobby pins and (since I'm short) clipped the bobby pins to the loop holding the clasp. You can also clip them higher up that strap. OR an alligator clip would hold tighter. I plan to use some wire to make an extra "eye" to go with the hook and eye set I purchased (less than $1.50 at Joann's this week--notions are 50% off). The hooks will be attached by sewing them to the strap. The eyes will go on the outside upper corners of the hood. The bottom of the hood attaches to nothing. I can do one that attaches... or just make it longer. For my LO it will be easier if it doesn't attach.

And if the hemming tape is too hard--you can use fleece with no hem and get a cute pattern (don't try to dye it!) or use cotton and clear nail polish on the cut edges.

@HabesBabe: LOL. Some kind of drool pads are totally worth it--it really sucks up the ridiculous amounts of drool. It probably doesn't really save me any washes (yet) since he is still a spitter...
Some etsy shops make cheaper ones but I would for sure make or buy one that fastens "for real" with velcro or snaps. A diaper would fall off or get yanked and twisted with just a safety pin. If you go to the trouble to add a fastener you might as well all out make some. :) Or.... like I used to do, just give baby the cloth and leave the straps naked.
I mean it could work but it would be a pain in the neck. Etsy ones seem to run $10 to $25 etsy

The ergobaby non-organic ones are $14 (free shipping) at this store that I like at Abby's Lane
They are also $13.99 at BRU (not free shipping).
I like my ergo ones because they are cheap and white so I can dye them.

But yeah if you try it and want me to make it for you we can work something out. :)

omggggggg @pastemoo you are amazing!! I need to attempt to tackle this one of these days. If I fail (which I'm sure I will because I can't sew or do anything that involves fabric), let me know how much you would charge to do this! Lol. Ahhh I can't wait to see the finished project!

Btw, are "real" drooling pads worth it? Can't I just wrap a cloth diaper prefold on each side?

Hi!
So I know you need a hood for your Beco Gemini.

And as it turns out I am way too petite for my ErgoBaby sport carrier. I returned it (amazing return policy!) and bought a Beco Gemini.

I have just begun the process of making a hood (and dying my teething pads).

I hit a stand-still because my sink stopper LEAKED and my cloths are grey instead of black but here's the start.

Take a piece of 100% cotton (white). I used part of a T-shirt no one was wearing. Get some resist (mine is from Tulip and I bought it at Michael's for about $7 or 8, yes I forgot to bring a coupon). Get some Rit dye in a color that coordinates with your carrier. Get some mini alligator clips OR some flat bobby pins. Get some coordinating color thread.

Draw a design with your resist (or wax if you're crafty!). Dye the fabric. Wash it and dry it (let it shrink!).

Once you have finished dyeing it, hem the edges (if you use an old shirt you only have to hem 3 edges!). Stitch (and hot glue if you want extra strength) a bobby pin on each side, facing toward the middle of the fabric. The bobby pin can go into the loop that the clasp is stiched into, or the little strap that is sewn down the shoulder straps.

Ta da!

Photos of what I have so far (I have to re dye it since my sink leaked and my fabric is grey and not black, so I'm not done!)

Supplies gathered. Not shown: black thread and needle. Sink.
[attach=741/12/mbi2jq.600x337.beco-01-supplies.JPG]

Oops #1. My jar was not hot water safe.
[attach=741/12/mbi2js.600x337.beco-02-oops.JPG]

Oops #2 My sink doesn't hold water so the color isn't as dark as I wanted it!
[attach=741/12/mbi2ju.600x337.beco-03-oops2.JPG]

So I got to pretty much REDO the resist--hopefully this means it'll have a good grey shadow around the white design. 2 stores I went to today did not have black Rit dye so I am waiting to finish it. I did try this with my carrier and the bobby pins *should* work. I'll let you know tomorrow (assuming LO lets me go to the store).
