@PinkElephant: If you don't want them to be able to see each other through the bathroom, then I think you would have to put the beds (if there is space) on the same wall as the door to the hallway.

Otherwise, if you don't care if they can see each other through the bathroom and just want something visually pleasing, then I would probably put the pink room bed on the wall with no windows, and the purple room bed on the wall between the two windows--basically directly opposite the door from the hallway.

Definitely get the beds and try a few different setups before hanging any artwork. Maybe even live with each configuration for a few days before making decisions.

I like to have the headboard of beds on interior walls, but it isn't quite possible in my son's room given the placement of the heating components.

@T.H.O.U.: Strangely, it is a VERY common setup in our area. Pretty much every house we considered have it. I like it for when the girls are older, so am coping now. :) The photos are absolutely terrible for showing this, but the rooms are actually pretty big - like 14' x 17' and 14' square. So in the first one, I could put the headboard centered along the wall facing the main door (the photo is taken from the doorway), or I could slide it over 5 feet and have it almost against the windows (there are 2, evenly spaced - you can just see one). The headboard wouldn't be under the windows, but yeah...I kind of don't like the idea of her being able to roll over and mess with the window.

In room #2, I currently have the crib turned daybed between the windows like you described - but that means she sleeps with her head toward the bathroom, not looking at it. Once I put a regular bed in, it will stick out from the wall and she will have a better view of the bathroom...although I think, aesthetically, that might be the best place for a bed. It'd be nice tucked in the corner, but since she has no other furniture , that place between the windows would look really bare.

We don't intend to buy dressers b/c both girls have enormous walk in closets with shelves/drawers. Probably desks eventually.

@PinkElephant: I think room #1 especially with a full size bed I would put it right there facing the hallway door. Yes it would also face the bathroom but it also would be away from any noise from the bathroom walls.

Room #2 if you didn't want it against the wall, could you put it between the two windows?

@PinkElephant: That is an odd layout. Hmmm. Ideally I like beds against a wall for little ones because it feels more secure and gives more floor space.

But it looks like to do that here, you'd have to put their head of the bed under one of the windows (room #1)? In room #2, maybe you could put the bed on the wall with the closet in the corner along the wall to the right of the hallway door?

I'm having a hard time picturing what you mean. But personally, I don't like beds against the wall. In DS's room the bed is in the. Or we, but you can still walk around the bed.

We have a twin for our youngest and queen for our oldest and both are against walls. However, their rooms are small so to allow for more play space this works best.

Ok, these are kind of crappy pictures I took (to show my kids the paint colors before we moved in, haha).

Bedroom 1: You're standing at the hallway door. The open door you can see is a closet; the bathroom door is on the wall "behind" you next to a second window on that right wall.

Bedroom 2: You're standing at the hallway door. The door you see is a closet; the bathroom is on your left all the way to the wall with the windows, and you can just see the corner of a second window on the wall in front of you.

@Foodnerd81: Full beds, but I can allow enough space to slip between the bed/wall for making the bed. They're not tight spaces, so technically I could allow enough space for even a nightstand if I wanted to - it is just off-center on the "main" wall, if that makes sense.

Going to try to attach pics of the rooms

What size bed? For a twin I don't mind having it up against a wall, because it's still easy enough to make the bed and change the sheets. But with a full or larger I hate climbing over the bed to tuck the sheets in, so I would always choose sticking out into the room. Even with a twin I would prefer space around both sides just to make bed making easier. Obviously I hate making the bed.

When setting up a child's bedroom, which is your preference for bed placement - with one long side against a wall (to open up more space in the room), or with the bed centered in the room (headboard only against the wall)?

I'm debating what to do in my daughters' rooms....I can see pros and cons to both methods. I know furniture is moveable, but we have a fresh paint job, so I'd like to make furniture placement as permanent as possible before I hang anything on their walls to avoid patching and rehanging later if we move furniture. All the positions I'm thinking of allow plenty of room for later furniture additions (a desk or dresser).

One hitch -- there is a jack & jill (jill and jill in our case, haha) bath between the bedrooms. I'd ideally like to avoid placing the beds in such a way that the girls will be directly facing (like right in front of it facing) the door, or sleeping parallel to it but very close, so that they don't bug each other if they eventually use the bathroom at night. I'm not sure how much to let this factor into my decision, so I'm curious to hear what other people's "design" preferences are.
