It seems that my bed rest is working! At my appointment today, I was still only 1 cm dilated. I was so nervous that things were progressing, but I'm happy to see that they are the same. I'll be 32 weeks on Saturday. Only 23 days to 35 weeks!!!!

@JennyG: Oh, I'm sorry to hear this. As hard as it is, forget about work - what's important is your baby's health. Yay for constant monitoring so they can do what is best for you!!

Hugs! I went on modified BR around 25 ish weeks I think for short cervix/preterm labor. I had to get steroid shots too and I was also on Procardia 3x/day to help slow down my contractions. My cervix was down to 0.8 cm. I saw a perinatologist every week to check my cervix and get a NST to monitor contractions.

And... after all that, my baby did not come until 39+6 weighing 7 lb 9 oz!! So, there is definitely hope  This was my 1st baby and I think since I'd been having so many contractions for months, my labor went very fast - had him 4 hours after getting to the hospital, only 20 mins pushing. My OB told me I will have to really be careful if I have a 2nd baby!

Thinking of you! I was on bed rest at 25 weeks due to my cervix shortening, but luckily it only lasted a week. Apparently, those things are "dynamic" and can change. I would also suggest a second opinion. Otherwise, make friends with Netflix! It's hard sometimes to see the big picture (healthy, full term babe) when we (well I do at least) get caught up in what I have to give up.

@kodybear: @Ginabean3: I don't think it was the 1 cm that made her so worried as to the fact that it was changing so quickly from the end of last week. She did say that if it stays at 1 cm at my next appointment, we could talk about lifting some restrictions, but still staying off work.

@bluestriped bee: I can totally see why the first few weeks would be the hardest. Trying to figure out how to make our house work and how to take care of our 2 year old. Luckily, our daycare is pretty cheap, so DS can keep going, at least for now.

We can use our sick days for maternity leave, and we have a sick bank through our union. We can't use the sick bank for maternity leave. The problem is that I would have use up all my saved sick days (30 days) to be eligible for the sick bank. That would basically leave me with zero paid maternity leave. The women in charge of the sick leave bank committee told me to apply and she will try her best to see what she can do.

I'm at home, so at least that's good. My goal is 35 weeks, knowing that everyday is one day more she has to get stronger. The local hospital (5 minutes away) here won't deliver before 35 weeks, so I'd have to go to the one 50 miles away. If I make it to 36 weeks, I could be off bed rest.

@JennyG: oh, my twins came at 34 weeks which is when my dr would induce. For my situation, since my water broke early, it is safer for my babies to be born at 34 weeks than to stay inside because with PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membranes) the risk of myself developing an infection greatly increases after 34 weeks. I spoke to the nicu dr and they said 32 weeks is a good milestone to get to. I ended up going all the way to 34 weeks. Both babies are doing well. We always knew they would be in the nicu so we were prepared. Babies have been in 11 days now. Yes, there's other stresses of having a nicu baby like not being able to taken them home but it's not the end of the world.

Do know that bed rest really helped me keep my babies incubating for the full 6 weeks. My Dr was amazed I went the full term.

I would ask your dr questions about your concerns . I'm sure they are trying to prevent you from going into preterm labor.

I'm thinking of you! I had my first at 30w5d and my second I was sure I would go early again (was on weekly progesterone shots) and went all the way to 40w5d.

I would get a second opinion about the bed rest...I don't think 1cm is a big deal, I was 1cm for almost two months with my second and she went past her due date!

Hugs! As you might be aware, I was put on hospital bed rest at 28 weeks and would be stuck in the hospital until they were delivered or until I reached 34 weeks and induced. (One of the twins bag sprung a leak and infection was concern.) For me the first two weeks were the hardest because I had so much to do at home and at work, I had to change priorities for some of the projects and try to think of things I could finish while in the hospital.

Anyway, do you have any paid short term disability benefits? Or any type of paid benefits?
If not, I'm so sorry that must be really stressful.

Are you on hospital bed rest or home bed rest?
How long did your dr say you will be on bed rest for? Til term?

@JennyG: yeah i saw so many different drs and they all had different opinions! i don't feel like 1cm dilated should be enough to warrant bed rest... unless it was continually getting dilated. cause i feel like so many moms are dilated for weeks before going into labor. i was at 4-5cm for a week or two before i went into labor. :-/ as far as the cervical length, many of the drs i saw (and articles i read) said that bedrest hasn't been proven to help with a shortened cervix and preterm labor. mine was about 2-2.5cm before it got super short at 34 weeks. hopefully you can talk to some other drs and see if they feel like bed rest is necessary

@sslm: I'm not contracting, so that's good. I've never heard that, but it sounds reasonable.

@kodybear: My cervical length on Monday was 1.4 cm. I didn't get an ultrasound for it today as she just checked me. I hear you on the second opinion. This actually the fourth doctor I've seen since Friday. She didn't freak me out as much as the one on Friday, but seemed more concerned than the one on Monday. It is so hard because they all have differing opinions. She was willing to think about me still working until she saw I was dilated.

This happened to me around 30 weeks as well. I was in the hospital for a few days (got steroid shots as well) and then worked from home after that until the baby came. What is your cervix length now? My cervix was literally non existent starting at 34 weeks (0.7cm) but i made it to 38w on just modified bed rest (rested when i could, worked from home, but was still able to move around for light activity). ETA i'd probably get a second opinion bc when i was getting check ups, every dr i saw was a little diff. some were super concerned about my cervix, and some didn't seem to think it was a big deal. the dr who was super concerned freaked me out and told me about strict bed rest etc. but thankfully the next dr i saw said keeping my activity level light was enough.

@JennyG: sorry. That sounds stressful :( were you contracting? My doctor told me that women who've had children tend to have a slightly open cervix all the time. Not sure how true that is but maybe it's as simple as that?

I had my 30 week appointment today. I've been being monitored for the last week for my cervix shortening. I already have been getting weekly shots of progesterone since my son was born early at 35 weeks.

Well, today's appointment started with a discussion of what kind of restrictions I needed to be on. My doctor wanted to discuss stopping working, but decided to check me first to see what was happening today. And I'm already 1 cm dilated! This quickly led to bed rest, a non-stress test to see if I was contracting, and my first steroid shot to help her lungs.

I'm such a mess right now. I worried about the baby and the possibility of her coming too soon. I can't stop thinking about how we're going to afford this. I'm sad about all the fun times I'm going to miss out on with my son in the next few weeks. I feel bad that I'm leaving work and all the teachers I work so abruptly.

Please just remind me that everything will work out and it'll be ok.
