I just thought of this post right now! :silly: we always sleep with our windows closed, even though we’d like fresh air and live in a relatively quite area. We keep a lot of windows open during the day and I’m hoping to get a Dutch front door! But we have wildlife around and I can’t stand the sound of bunnies being eaten. Terrible. So tonight I’m out late with my husband in the backyard because we are going to smoke a brisket overnight. We are being so quiet and I actually heard the neighbor close his bedroom window. oops. But doing this brisket is so exciting!

@JennyLayneAZ: Yes, we are on the street side of the house and sometimes it is annoying. We are in a pretty quiet area but it is still there.

Closed, but our bedroom is at the front of the house, so street noise bothers me. If our room wasn't at the front, I'd open it for sure.

I love open when the weather is nice. It’s how I grew up, we didn’t have AC and lived in the Midwest. But we are in FL now so that isn’t often that we can. Even when we do it’s only our bedroom, I am too scared to leave the kids windows open out of fear of someone coming in while we sleep. And we live in a perfectly safe place.

@Ajsmommy: night sounds in the country are the best. We live in the city so I don’t get any of that.

@Mommy Finger: yes, now that DS1 is older it isn’t such a big deal but when he was little he never had his window open.

@Chuckles: oh wow! That would be so scary.

@Anagram: yes, there is a lot of scary things that happen. If DH is away I tend to keep things more locked up/closed.

I will never, ever sleep with windows open, unless I'm in a high rise or something. Ever since I saw that creepy viral security video of a man breaking + entering a 2nd floor window with a ladder in the dead of night, where he assaulted a woman sleeping. Just....no. I don't even consider myself anxious person, but I just can't do it.

I've seen too many tv shows about kidnappings and assaults. And then there was my 1 roommate that worked at a rape crisis line, who constantly told me horrible statistics like women who keep their shades open at night are assaulted more frequently (because perps case neighborhoods ahead of time). Not to mention that horrible, traumatizing story of the female couple in Seattle who woke up to an intruder in their house (from their window being open as they slept)...... I was glued to that case and I'm disturbed by it even today.

As soon as it's dark, my blinds are closed windows shut.

Every night when its warm! We don't have air conditioning so we have a very regimented window opening/closing blinds up/down routine to keep the house comfortable.

We also live in a pretty quiet town, so no concerns about noise.

I love having the windows open at night in the bedrooms when it's nice out. But I'm near Chicago, so that timeframe is pretty limited.
In terms of first floor windows and security concerns, not to make people nervous, but our house was broken into Sunday night while we were home. Our front windows were open about 4 inches. My husband had planned to close them before he went to sleep (he's a night owl!), but he was in the basement at midnight and they were still open. I've never been too concerned because they aren't right at ground level, not behind bushes, and there's a streetlight right out front. But some guy brought one of our patio chairs from our backyard around to the front to climb up, broke the screen, and climbed in. It was crazy because we live in a very quiet neighborhood (though in a major metropolitan area).
Anyways, everyone should take safety concerns seriously with first floor windows, is my PSA for today!

DH and I often sleep with the window open at night in the late spring/early summer, when the temperatures allow and before the wildfire smoke starts (unfortunately this has become commonplace in August over the last couple years). We always make sure DD’s window is closed before we go to bed because we are in an urban area and have a raised ranch, so even though our rooms are on the same floor, she is at ground level and we’re not. I’m not comfortable having her window open while we’re asleep.

@erinbaderin: This. I'm in the NE and although we're finally warmed up, it still gets chilly at night so we shut it just before going to sleep. But I suppose we'll be able to leave it open for a few weeks, before it gets too hot and we have to turn on the AC.

I love the windows open if the weather allows! The only thing I hated about blackout curtains for my littles is that it meant it was hard to keep the windows open for them at night to cool down their rooms as that would also let the light in. So we sleep with them closed for a while before they got a bit older.

It depends where I am.

I grew up in upstate NY and during the summer windows were open. We had no AC. It would cool down nicely most nights and I loved hearing the night sounds.... (I grew up in the country)

Now I live in MD and no chance we can leave the windows open, too muggy/hot... there might be a few nights as the season changes when you could leave the windows open but for the most part they are closed and AC is on.

We keep it cracked with the fan on until we just have to turn on the A/C. I'd have it open wider, but then the dog tends to bark at people arriving home late/early morning dog walkers.

If the weather permits I sleep with the windows open... But it was 73% humidity @ 82° where I live yesterday, and there is no way I'm sleeping in that mess.

@Corduroy: does your windows have the stud pop outs where the window can't be opened beyond a certain amount, even by force? Thankfully this house our bedroom is over the walkout basement so we can open them without concern; but my parents had a 1 story ranch with the "safety" windows and I always felt really secure.
