Following - my son is 3y4m and paci is restricted to bedtime only, but he is OBSESSED with it and keeps it in his mouth all night. And when he gets tired he cries and asks for his "baby" (that's what he calls it). And if for some reason he loses it during the night (rarely happens), he is hysterical until I help him find it, then he will go back to sleep.

I know I need to get rid of it, but uggggh. I also have a 6 month old who's up all night and I just can't deal right now. But I'm a little worried I'm going to have a kindergartener who uses a paci...

@wrkbrk: DD was also obsessed with the bink! We restricted it to her bedroom a while ago, but she would still ask to go lie down with her binks mid-tantrum as a self-soothing strategy. So far, knock wood, it has been much smoother than I expected. No real naps yet, but bedtime has gotten better and better each night.

Thanks everyone for weighing in!

@SweetiePie: Smart! We just saved one as a symbolic thing and “mailed” the rest to Baby a Margaret from Daniel Tiger (his choice). Lol.

@wrkbrk: haha!
She brought him a small toy car for every binky he gave up. I think 5 in total.

@SweetiePie: What did the paci fairy bring him? We put our paci in a build a bear kitty (aptly named Paci Kitty....😂).

@wrkbrk: about the same timeline for us.
Just after 3 told him paci fairy was coming. He was excited. Then when he went to bed the next night and he realized “oh sh*t they really are gone” he cried. Sort of like CIO, the worst night was the first. Then it got better each night till finally the 4th night or so it was no problem.

Naps were much worse (basically skipped them) but they still regulated about the same time as night sleep.

We took the paci away about a year ago (at 2.5) and the next day my daughter got sick and so we let her sleep with us. A year later she still sleeps with us and I love it! I cherish our nightly snuggles. I'm not worried about it and I'm enjoying it. I sleep much knowing she is so close. One day she will want nothing to do with her us and until then I'm going to enjoy it!

My son dropped his final nap and pacifier at the same time, so I think that cleared the path to an easy night falling asleep.

We never took the paci away from our DD. She was 3 y 2 months and one night when I put her to bed she was holding it in her hand. She did that for 3 nights and then she was done.

Leading up to that she had been chewing on it more than sucking on it... anyway we never talked about it or anything, she just gave it up on her own.

@lady baltimore: Same. We did this 3 months ago for my son (Just turned 3). It took five nights for him to be back in his bed, more or less sleeping like normal without it. I was expecting much much worse!!!!! He was obsessed....

@lady baltimore: so we had a similar experience: took away the paci right after 3 and our girl had no idea how to fall asleep! I stayed in her room the first couple nights and did some quiet singing and back rubbing.

I really tried to think about it as learning new sleep cues to replace the paci. I encouraged her to try rubbing a blanket or cuddling a stuffed animal but it took her a while to find some strategies. I remember it took about a week to get back to a reasonable length of bedtime. But i was motivated to get through the rough patch so we made it work.

She is 7 now and falls asleep just fine on her own. It is possible!!

Both times we for rid of the pacifier before they turned one and we would rub their back or hold their hand til they fell asleep. Usually took a couple weeks for them to not miss having the pacifier

How long did it take your LO to learn to fall asleep after you stopped allowing pacifiers at bedtime?

We have been talking up dropping the binks with DD (who just turned three) for a little while, intending to tackle the task over my winter break. She decided on her own that Sunday was the night (aided, no doubt, by having picked out her no-bink reward at Target that day), and she really gutted it out, but clearly had no idea how to go about falling asleep without the pacifier. We eventually took her to bed with us, and though it took her a while to fall asleep, she slept through the night. Last night was similar, though we got her down earlier (again in our bed). Tonight, it took about 2 hours and some extra cuddles and crying, and she is asleep in her own bed, but I think she just passed out from cumulative exhaustion (no nap either day).

How long did you feel like it took to settle in to the new normal of bedtime after binks, and did you do anything in particular to help LO figure out how to fall asleep?
