I work about 8:15-4:15, pick LO up around 5, and home at 5:30. DH gets home about 6:30. We don't really have a bedtime routine, just put her in PJs around 7, and nurse her for the last time around 7:30. She is in bed by 8 and sleeps until 7. She's 4.5 months old right now.

I work a 7:30-4 schedule, home at 4:40, and DS (who is 4 months) doesnt go down for the night until 9:30. He takes a couple cat naps during the evening, sleeps from 9:30pm-6:30/7am, has a bottle, then goes back down for another 1.5-2 hrs. My mom and MIL watch him at our house, so we dont have the wake-up time issue.

After reading these posts though, I'm realizing I can probably move his bedtime up an hour or so by giving that last bottle a little earlier.

My daughter is 15 months old and her bedtime is 5:30pm. I am able to pick her up by 4:30pm...She plays, eats dinner, has a bath, and then goes to bed. It's a little weird for most people that she goes to sleep so early but she loves her sleep and needs 12 hours of it - we all get up at 5:30am.

My 3 month old goes to bed at around 8-8:30. I get home at 6 and then have to set up dinner and take care of my 2.5 yr old son. So there's no way I can put her to bed any earlier than that. I give her a bath right after dinner (around 7:30), change her, nurse her, and put her down After she's asleep, I play with my son for a little while, bath, read books and lights out at 9:00. He'll fall asleep usually by around 9:30. It totally works for us. My son sleeps through the night and my daughter only wakes up once to feed. They both get up at 8am, which is perfect timing for us. It allows my DH and I to both shower/get ready and then prepare breakfast. Don't worry about the other mommies and their babies. Do what works best for you!

@Revel: Well it's only been 1 week so I'm not sure if it's working YET! But, all of the other women who have had kids assumed this schedule.

I also agree with what @mediagirl said - assume your baby will need 10-12 hours of overnight sleep and do the math! I need to leave the house by 7:45 to get to work at 9 and 7:30 is much preferable so I can get here at 8:30.

@marley: More attorneys! Good luck with going back to work. I don't know what it is about 5 that sounds so early, when sometimes I leave a 6, but it seems like a world of difference.

@mediagirl: Wakeup time is a good point. I'd think I could work out a schedule where LO could sleep to 7:30 because my commute is short, but I guess getting more time in the morning would also be an option, if evenings had to be cut short.

@winniebee: I have some ideas about flex time and what not - but nothing that is really concrete in my mind yet. I haven't even announced, not due until June 1, so there is time. We're a small firm so don't have any formal policies in place, but are generally family friendly and flexible so I am optimistic. I'll have to keep a 75-80% schedule in mind as an option. I'm glad it's working for you - I don't feel like law is the most family friendly profession.

@T-Mom: 10pm, wow! I guess there are as many ways as there are families out there...

I worked it out with my boss that I leave work at 4pm every day. I know that may not work for you but they were very lenient about it. I work 7:30 to 4 with a half hour lunch. I get the baby, we get home by 5 and have dinner by 5:30. We do her bedtime routine starting at 6:10/6:15 and she is asleep by 7. Since she gets up so early, we have to get her down by 7 or she won't get enough sleep. We wake her up at 6:20 every morning.

That's another thing to consider - wakeup time. Will you be able to let your lo sleep in until 7 or later? Then they may have a later bedtime!

@Revel: I'm an attorney too! My daughter is 12 weeks and goes to sleep around 7:30. I go back to work next week (sad) and I plan on leaving at 5 too (not sure how the partners will feel about this). Even leaving at 5 doesn't seem like its enough time! I'm so afraid she's going to not know who I am.

I'm worried about this too! I go back to work in two weeks, and I don't get home until 6:30 pm.
DS is only 12 weeks, but he doesn't go to bed until 8:30-9 pm right now and is up at 6:30 am, which will be perfect if he is able to keep it up. I know people say babies need more sleep than that, but he seems to do just fine with that amount of sleep.

Bedtime has always been 8pm for us. I also know people who put their babies down at 630 but fortunately my son was fine sleeping at 8. It's important to me to spend time with him in the evenings. I also wake him up before I leave for work at 7 if he's not up already, which he usually is.

@Revel: I 100% agree that it depends on the child, I have a friend who's baby goes to sleep super early but she's a SAHM so it isn't an issue for her. The healthy sleep habits, happy child book recommends a 7:30/8pm bed time so that's what our goal was when we started his routine before I went back to work.

@Revel: I also have a friend with 3 kids under 5 whose kids all went to sleep at 10pm.. i told her I thought she was crazy, but she wanted to spend time with the kids after work and the whole family was just night owls. Once the 5 yr started school, they all started sleeping at 9. It really just depends on what you're comfortable with and also the disposition of the kids..

@Revel: i'm a lawyer too and I dropped to 75% time - have an extra day at home and can leave at 5 "guilt free" though I still do feel guilty. You'll get a sense of what your baby needs. For awhile my LO took longer naps and could sustain a later bedtime of like 9. Then around 4 months his naps shortened and he just could not stay up as late. Since my husband works later hours too, I would love a later bedtime but baby dictates otherwise!

Thanks for all the feedback so far ladies! I'm an attorney so the leaving work a 5 thing will be one challenge, but I'm pretty sure I can set it up.

It sounds like a slightly later bedtime is doable - I always imagined liked 7:30-8pm being a nice mix between time with LO and time alone/as a couple afterwards, so I'm glad to see that is the norm for some, and not all babies go to sleep so early. Of course I would imagine it depends on the child too.

@Revel: my LO is 5the months this week and he goes to bed at 8pm. Sometimes it's 7:30 if he didn't get a good nap between 3-5 window but usually 8is and he sleeps until 6:30 or 7am. It works well for us, we get time with him but still have time to get things done around the house after he goes to bed.

I used to work until 6 (or later) every day; now I leave right at 5. We play with LO for a while, then she gets a bath, PJs and a bottle. It’s very rare that she falls asleep before 8:30pm; but she sleeps through the night and isn’t fussy at all, so I know she is getting enough sleep. She will NOT sleep at 6:30 or 7 like some babies.

My LO has always slept at 7:30. That's honestly just the earliest I can get him down after getting home from work, dinner, bath, etc. I think he would actually sleep earlier if I could make it happen, but it's hard with 2 kids. When I only had one, I was able to get her down by 7 if I left by 5.

ETA: LO is 15 months but on same bedtime since 5 month

I work out of the home and leave work at 5 on the button (used to work much later) - it's get LO from daycare, play with him for 20 minutes and start bedtime routine. He goes to bed at 7. I toyed with an earlier bedtime but ultimately knew that I could never keep up with it when I went back to work, so 7 it is. He started this bedtime around 4 months and he's almost 6 months.

I'm still in the first trimester, but this is a question that occurs to me often when I read about babies and sleep. How do mom's who work out of the home set up a specific bedtime and a bedtime routine?

I see posts where babies go to sleep at 6 or 6:30pm and I can't see myself leaving work before 5, even after adjusting my schedule for having a family ( right now I work until 6 or 6:30 most days). Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Will I be able to set a later bedtime (like 7:30 or 8pm) so I can see LO at night?
