@sarac: I think to a big extent it's that but that hasn't changed, she's always been napping and still going to bed by 10, and the last few days it's just been crazy how overactive she is. I'm legitimately starting to worry if there's something physical going on because she seems tired but her body just cannot stop moving.

@JennyD: unfortunately a few months ago she started insisting that someone lay with her while she falls asleep. It's been fine because she's fall asleep normally within a half hour or so but this recent hyperactivity spike, she's literally bouncing off the walls so even as we try to not engage, it becomes impossible with her in and out of bed, tossing and turning, etc. And even that aside I can't fall asleep until I know she's out. Last night hubby and I tag teamed- she fell asleep at 11:45! It was nuts- she seemed tired but her body just couldn't stop moving.

It's that nap. My daughter is like this, and things didn't improve until this year when she went to kindergarten. Now she doesn't nap, she is busy all day, and she has to get up early. So now she easily goes to bed at 8. I bet it'll be the same for you.

My 4-1/2 year old gets like this around 4:30 and stays that way pretty much all night.

I thought maybe she was overtired, but even once she's in bed (7-8)she'll be up for another hour or more playing or reading.

She's not necessarily a low sleep needs kid. We keep a fairly consistent bedtime, but for our sanity. My philosophy is that I don't care what she's doing after bedtime as long as she's doing it quietly in her room.

Could you try that? And go to bed?

When she was a (typical) baby, we split the night. My husband is a night owl who didn't necessarily have to be at work super early, and I am a morning person. So I would go to bed at 8, he would stay up, give her the midnight bottle, and then go to bed and I would get up with her in the early hours (4 or so, whatever it was) and everyone more or less got 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Alternatively, have you tried napping?!? 😂 There's a guy at work who has a 25 minute nap every day at lunch. It's amazing.

I have one of those low sleep needs kids. At almost 3.5, she sleeps ~8-9 hours at night and 2 hours nap (at school). Her average bedtime is 10 pm, and she's up 6:45 on weekdays and 7:15-7:30 on weekends.

We've struggled with getting her to bed since she got past her first birthday. Her bedtime crept later and later and she was taking longer and longer to fall asleep. We've tried everything- earlier bedtimes, later ones, different routines, nothing helps. She has a very distinct "off" switch and it comes when it comes (usually about 13 hours of total awake time later).

Her evening hyperactivity is crazy, and the last few days it's really bad. Right around 8-8:30, we notice a switch- she usually starts jumping, running, etc. We don't do sugar, we turn off electronics right after dinner (~7), we have low lights, we try quiet activities, nothing helps. And lately especially, it's as if her body can't stop moving. It's 10:30 as I type this and she is turning every which way, getting in and out of bed, like some kind of wound up toy. She fell asleep at 10:45 last night and looks like it'll be in that realm tonight too.

Anyone have experience with this? I have no idea how to calm her down in the evenings, and how to help her settle. I've gotten used to a late bedtime now but I can't function if 11 pm is going to become a new normal. Unfortunately school forces them to nap (and she has no problem with falling asleep for nap time) so that's part of the problem and I worry that because of naps and getting older, her body isn't ready to sleep until later and later, which has been the case for the past 2 years. But the hyperactivity is off the charts and I can't figure out what's going on. Would love any thoughts bees may have.
