did wake up and whimpered a little, but settled herself back down. Hooray!

PS. I *really* should've had a bottle of wine ready to open tonight. Might make a trip out tomorrow for one...

@Emsmems: I just left her, but had DH go in once to flip her.

... And she's awake... Sigh. We might have to do Ferber checks with the rolling thing. I wanted to do extinction.

@Emsmems: it was worse than I thought. Ugh. The most she cried for naps was 20 min. She went for an hour. She rolled and got stuck on her belly. So we waited a little while and flipped her and she freaked and rolled right back over. Ugh. Why did she have to start rolling now?? But she's asleep now. Hopefully this will be the worst of it.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: how's it going? We decided tonight was our night too... Part inspiration from you, part from DH's friend who told us they did it at this age and it made life so much better. He cried 14 minutes and he's out. Naps tomorrow are going to be way worse!

I nursed with lights on and then rocked her a bit. Before she would nurse for an hour to fall asleep. So cutting her off after 20 mins was enough to make sure she didn't fall asleep nursing.

I just started CIO last night, and before I was doing the same as you - nursing as the last step. So I just decided to feed before bath. I don't want to have the nurse/suck to sleep association, which I've heard can still happen if you do it at the end, even if you put them down drowsy.

I'm nursing her right now actually and she's almost asleep. Gonna transfer her to her sleep sack here in a min and I know she'll wake up for it. Just trying to get her as relaxed as possible before the move. Good luck to you tonight!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Nights 12 and 13 were bad (like, 45-an hour of crying to put her down), then it got better, then 17 and 18 were bad (same amount of crying). Otherwise, pretty much since night 7 she's gone down with no crying, and usually just one wake up (I'll nurse because she goes right back down). We still have hellish early wake ups in the morning, but I'm hoping to work on that...eventually. Yawn. ;)

Hi. We are sleep training twins. I just broke in my 19 weeker tonight as well, partly out of inspiration that you decided to go for it! We also saved the eating for last, but I was giving him a pumped bottle so I'd know he was full and just held him upright. That seemed to keep him awake. Would nursing with the light on have a similar effect?

@ms.janedoe: ok thank you! We definitely want to be consistent which we were not before! At least when all hell broke loose and nap and bedtime went bad. I'm still going to do motn wake ups to nurse her back to sleep. How long after you started training was there regression?

@abbydabbydoodlebug: No advice on someone else putting LO down--my husband travels for work so I do all the bedtimes! If LO takes a bottle, I wouldn't think it'd be any different! One huge thing, STICK WITH IT. We had a few little regressions that were ROUGH. It's totally normal and as much as it blowssss, stay consistent. Good luck!

@ms.janedoe: I dont think I'll mind doing it as the last thing as long as it doesn't mean I have to be the one to put her to sleep every night. Just replace me with a bottle right? I'm leaving her for 1 night at my MIL's for the 4th of July. So I want her to be able to go down easy by then.

@hilsy85: I think I'll try that or just transfer her before she goes completely comatose, lol.

@Emsmems: thank you, I hope it goes well. Naps weren't too bad today. The most she cried was about 20 min. Hopefully bedtime will be ok too! And maybe it'll keep her from waking up 40 min after like she has been.

I would either nurse her before bath, or as @kemma suggested, nurse her and then put her in the sleep sack. That should wake her up enough so she's aware that she's going into the crib awake.

So, this kind of goes against the whole CIO business, but when we did it (at 6 months), I kept our usual bedtime routine:

Shut all curtains
Bath
Diaper
Lotion
PJs
Turn on noise machine
Turn off light
Nurse

I kept nursing as the last thing. According to Ferber's book, it's OK to do (though I know a lot of people don't keep it). The first week or two she'd wake on transfer and that'd start the crying, but we're at the point now (night 34 to be exact! ;) where I'll nurse her, stand up and put her in her crib and she'll just roll over and go to sleep in the crib.

Good luck!

What you have looks like a great bedtime routine at that age. We didn't add a book into LOs bedtime routine until she was over a year because it just overstimulated her.

We just added a book in after nursing. DH is the one that reads to her, and he loves it because he gets to be a part of the routine. So I do lotion, pjs, white noise, SleepSack, nurse, then DH comes in and reads her a book then puts her to bed. It works well for us! Good luck!!

ETA: it's been this way since she was 4 months old.

@gotkimchi: thank you! I actually was going to wait until her 4 month well check next week to see what my pedi thinks, but about 4 days ago she started freaking out at bedtime, would wake up after 40 min, need to be nursed again. Then naps started becoming hell too and my DH and I started getting super snappy with each other because we were both so stressed out about it. So we just couldn't take it anymore and decided to sleep train. Our friends, who go to the same pedi with an older child, said that she would tell us to cut out nursing to sleep, paci, and other sleep crutches anyway.

@wonderstruck: maybe she won't be cranky after I feed her, hmm...

@Kemma: I was thinking of that too. I just want this to be as painless as possible for both of us!

@Emsmems: It was hard fit me to decide too! What really sealed it was that I was crying every day, she was crying every day and I kept snapping at DH. I kept getting really frustrated at DD and dreaded every nap and bedtime. So it was just time. But yeah, we switched her to the sleep sack, getting rid of the paci and just going cold turkey with it all. She started rolling over to her tummy in hey crib and she did it in the merlin suit last night! Eek. Do that's also another reason why we did it today.

When we started our bedtime routine I would give him his last feeding, read a very short book (his favorite is Llama Llama Nighty Night - seriously, it takes less than a minute to read) and then put him in the crib and turn on his soother. So if you're going to try to stop nursing to sleep anyways, maybe it would make sense to do a book after nursing, and just make it a short one?

My DD is 18 weeks and we're starting CIO sleep training tonight. I'm not sure how to do bedtime because we usually nurse to sleep. I need to figure out something similar to what we have going now but without the nursing to sleep part. She normally wakes around 5-530 from her last nap (we nurse then) and we start bedtime routine at 630ish.

It consists of:
Bath
Lotion/diaper/PJ
Go to nursery
White noise
Curtains closed
Sleep sack
Nurse to sleep

She is usually asleep by 730. One problem I'm having is she gets pretty whiney/cranky and wanting to nurse when we come into the room. So i don't think it'd work to read a book because she's pretty tired by then. Should I start bedtime earlier? Nurse at a different time? Not sure how hungry she'd be if she eats after she wakes from her nap though.

Any suggestions?
