@Littlebit: that would be my advice: do a routine walk-run schedule. It will let you run for longer and keep you from being discouraged!

If you bring your phone, add the Run Keeper app. It tracks your pace which can help you consciously slow it down and be able to run longer. I am the worst at starting too fast and feeling great and then hit a wall way earlier than I would have otherwise. If I can check my pace I've learned what is fast for me (and by the way fast for me is some people's painfully slow :bummed: ) and a good pace for me to start and then can speed up if I'm feeling good.

Also don't get discouraged. It takes a lot of time for running to feel good. Or at least it took me a lot of consistency to feel comfortable with my running.

@MamaMoose: Because you're in control on the road . . . it's different than the treadmill artificially controlling your speed!

@MsLipGloss: Oddly enough I'm always faster on the road than the speed I feel comfortable at on the treadmill. I don't get it!!

@Mae: Good advice. I see so many runners waste so much energy via upper body mechanics! I keep my hands/arms loose and let them hang out by my hips . . . and I push through my hips when I run to try to fully engage my lower body.

@mrbee: Don't run with anything you have to hold (it will throw off your stride). And just take your time . . . running at a zero incline on a treadmill is nothing like running outside (it's more like running at a 1.5 incline when you're running outside on flat/level ground). You may be quite a bit slower, but don't let that discourage you!

Do some dynamic stretches before and after (avoid static holds) and try to relax and stay loose while you are running. Don't push yourself too hard in the beginning.

Good socks and shoes are key. The shoes I run in I never wear anywhere else except to run in. Atart slow, run one, walk 2--harder than you think at first. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Relax your arms and I would also suggest taking your heart rate if you don't have a monitor.

Oh fun! Are you running in the park or on the streets? I find street running easier because having things to look at distracts me from the fact that I'm running. Wear a heart rate monitor if you have one, it keeps you from running too fast. Otherwise, you should be running at a pace where you can hold a conversation. Have fun!

wear really comfortable cushy socks. I had no idea how important socks are. Also don't clench your fists, and keep your shoulders/arms loose. The first time I tried to go running I was all clenchy and it made me tire out so much faster.

Stretch, start slow, and work your way up. Run for a minute, walk for 2, repeat, etc. Concentrate on your breathing!

Start slow!! Don't try to go your fastest at the beginning, you'll burn out quickly. Stretch really well before and after. And drink lots of water before and after.
