Oh noooooo!!! Our neighbors had a similar problem. They had a beekeeper & terminator come out 3x! She told us that they told her to let us know we couldn't leave the dogs out for long and to be very careful if we let our daughter play outside for 3 days. The last visit seemed to have taken care of it, she said it was really bad and they could hear the buzzing from just about anywhere inside their house. Good luck!!! I hate all bugs, especially the kinds that sting so I run the hell away as fast as I can, lol.

There was bee and/or wasp nest all over the place on the house and in the yard. DH just sprayed them down with raid and they just literally dropped dead on the spot. Maybe you can just spray or dump some stuff down the hole.

I had a problem with yellow jackets getting between my cement steps and house (through a very tiny crack). We called an exterminator who came out assessed the situation but didn't spray until the evening (less risk of getting stung). Definitely sounds like you need to have someone professional examine the yard because the holes/hives could be connected. Could your usual exterminator recommend someone else for this work?

We had one at our previous home. They formed a HUGE honeycomb home in an old water meter bucket/hole. We had no idea! We were doing yard work one day when DH looked up and saw me walking into a swarm of bees. He screamed for me to back away asap, but I was all like huh?

We called a bee keeper to come out and smoke them out. It was during the day, and omg! The bright clear summer sky was DARK filled with BEES!!! I prayed that none of our neighbors were home because I would feel terrible if any of them got stung!! The bee keeper himself, despite being clothed well, got stung several times!! He showed us the queen bee and sprayed the hole down with some chemical so that the bees didn't return.

Hope you get yours taken care of soon. No bueno!!

@locavore_mama: yes! Bees can live in the ground. I think those are hornets? Yellow jackets? They're mean, awful bees.

We've got a bee infestation. I don't know what makes our home and yard so desire able. We have terminex and they do come out and spray, but damn, they can't keep up with it.

We've got mud wasps, angry bees that Mrs Twine helped us identify, and more recently white faced hornets that attacked me when I was pulling weeds out front.

Wait until dark and spray them with bee/hornet/wasp spray. Make sure it's night time! You might have to spray a few nights in a row, but they'll be gone.

@sunny: ew! And yes I guess certain bees, the females, will sting if threatened. I am wondering if they're yellow jackets instead. I guess Bees typically burrow in the Spring.

I read that bees are actually quite docile and its usually wasps that sting.

So weird that they are in the ground. We had good luck with the spray. They kill on contact and you can spray from really far away. We had a colony in our eaves and between the exterior & interior wall gap. Ugh... when we sprayed, they started coming INSIDE but they were all half dead so by the time they made it in, they were all gathered in a big dead pile near a small hole in the wall. It was so gross!!!!

Wait so your normal people won't do it b/c it's in ground?! I did not know bees do that either... Can you at least ask them for a referral to someone who will? It just seems so weird that they won't do this one kind of extermination.

Doing a bit of Googling and wondering if they're actually yellowjackets instead. Seems like bees typically burrow in the spring and honeybees do NOT typically burrow in the ground especially in like a lawn.

@swurlygurl: Yes! It's crazy! The hole is HUGE and it definitely was not there before.

@T.H.O.U.: that's possible but I want a professional out to access and look for any other potential hives. I don't want to risk M walking around our backyard and disturbing a hive we don't know about. We don't think they're honey bees.

Bees can live IN the ground now?! Goodness... We have a crazy problem that we're working on getting rid of - carpenter bees. They are HUGE and so bothersome. They've built their colonies in any rotting wood we have in our yard, which is a lot. We have an OLD deck and gazebo that we're working on fixing up, so we're slowly removing the problem. We back up to an awesome wooded area - why can't they just live there and not be attached to our house?! :(

Not the fun human kind! ;)

Some of you may remember me posting a few weeks ago about how my husband got stung over a dozen times while mowing our lawn. Well since then he's bought spray from Lowe's.
Just a few days after that he found another nest in the ground in our backyard. The hole is huge enough where we doubt it was from the bees transplanting?

The two locations are only about 20' apart. Now I am worried there is a bee colony in our backyard!!!

Anyone else ever have a huge bee problem in their backyard?

Because it's not around the perimeter of our house and IN the ground the local exterminating company we typically use does not deal with it.

And I'm sorry but I'm not going to just "smoke" them out, etc. DH was already stung about 18x so if he gets stung again it could be deadly seeing as he was allergic as a kid. And it's right near our house where our daughter plays.
