Also, quit drinking calories. No soda, no weird high-calorie Starbucks drinks, light beer etc. It's amazing how many calories we all drink in a day.

High fiber foods help too.

And of course, and I can't believe I didn't mention this sooner: cut out dessert (unless it's a special occasion or something). It's really easy to eat it if it's in the house so don't even buy sweets.

This might sound unconventional but become foodies to an extent. Once my husband and I started cooking together more and reading about food we started eating so much healthier. When I first met him he was eating some version of sausage for probably half of his lunches. It's not that he never eats sausage anymore but it's not even once a month anymore. I really like Michael Pollan's advice and information about food.

You can try Paleo recipes. Paleo is meats and veggies, nuts and seeds, some fruit, low starch, no sugar. The best thing (for your husband) is that there is a good portion of meat available. That helps with a fuller meal. Also, nuts and seeds make fantastic snacks that you can take anywhere. Just google paleo recipes and see what they have.

@lovelife: If you wanna cut down on the quantity of food you consume you should try chia seeds. They're packed with lots of nutrients. I take a tablespoon before breakfast (i throw them in my mouth and swallow them like they're medicine) and dinner and it really curbs my appetite! I've lost 4 pounds already!

Looks like a good plan! I try not to eat after 6pm too. It really helps with weight loss.
Good luck!

Sweet potatoes, squashes (steamed or baked) are really good for you too. And they fill you up!

Thanks everyone! this really helps! Here is our plan
we are going to try and eat whats in the house until new years.. (not the most healthy stuff, like hamburger helper, ground beef.. etc) we can't afford to just pitch it and go grocery shopping. But once new years hits... here are things we are going to do..

1,. No sugary drinks.
2. No sweets.
3. Eat at the table... (so we are paying attention to how full we are instead of the tv)
4. switch everything to whole grain.
5. have things like boiled eggs, veggies and fruits for snacks.
6. switch ground hamburger for ground turkey
7. salads salads salads. ... with light dressing
8. no processed foods!
9. drink alot of water!
10. no eating 3 hours before bed!
11. We don't eat out much but when we do we have subway So i'm still going to allow that once every two weeks.

any other suggestions would be great! I'm really looking forward to this!

I have to jump on the no processed foods bandwagon. They usually contain a lot of sodium, which makes you retain water. Also, you'd be surprised how much of them have high fructose corn syrup in them. I know there's some controversy about HFCS and obesity, but what I don't like is that they're changing our palates to expect foods to be sweeter than they should be. For example, boxed stuffing. Why does stuffing need HFCS? I don't get it.

One suggestion that hasn't yet been made -- try making soups for low cal meals that can be really filling and satisfying (and cheap). Look for ones that are veggie-based or use lean meat, beans, etc. Add a side salad, whole grain bread and even your husband should be satisfied. (I usually have a huge appetite, so I speak from experience.)

As far as exercising at home in the winter, try some exercise DVDs. Anything by Jillian Michaels ROCKS. I've been doing her workouts 30 min - 1 hr a day 5/6 days a week and it has made a huge difference. I used to hate working out, but her workouts are so effective it really keeps me motivated. You might not even need to change your diet to see a big difference.

Well I'm not a parent yet, but I have experience since I lost a lot of weight a few years ago. I would say the most important thing is to track what you eat. It's a pain in the rear, but do it. And of course sticking to a primarily plant based diet is important. Try to buy fruits and veggies in season, sometimes they go on sale when they're at their peak. Also, when you buy them, EAT Them.. right away! If I buy cilantro to make pasta one day, I'll save the rest and use it as an addition to a salad or something the next day. Nothing gets wasted!

I try to do a substantial vegetarian salad at least a couple nights a week for dinner. I do things like quinoa w/ red pepper, edamame, feta cheese, and dried cherries... or lentils with butternut squash, curry powder, cumin, goat cheese, and arugula. Top that all with a vinagarette dressing (keep it light on the olive oil), and you have a good substantial and healthy meal. If you're normally a meat and potatoes kind of person, this kind of dish might take some getting used to, but I find that my husband really likes my salads and has stopped asking "where's the meat" like he used to.

In response to healthy for a manual labor working guy:

Substitute ground turkey in place of ground beef: we have turkey tacos/turkey spaghetti etc. My husband doesn't even know the difference anymore. Every once in awhile I'll make those the "normal" way as a treat.

I hate chicken, but chicken is a great lean meat. Buy the cheaper cuts (anything other than breasts, they're on sale all the time) and throw in a crock pot with some garlic, chicken broth and rosemary or sage. Cook it forever. It'll be moist and super tender. Pair with long grain rice and a veggi. He'll eat a lot of the meat and the rice will stick to his bones.

We also eat a lot of pork (especially since I hate chicken). You can crock pot that too. Roast it. Bake it in the oven.

There are so many ways to cook meats that don't require a stove/oils etc.

I would suggest starting with some straightforward healthy eating cookbooks. The first that pops into my mind is America's Test Kitchen Healthy Family Cookbook. I love this line of books, as all their recipes have been tested over and over again to ensure that they work without fail every time. You might also enjoy the "Clean Eating" cookbooks by Tosca Reno.

I think that starting with a cookbook is a good idea, as it gives you some inspiration as to what kind of meals you can expect to make and what foods/flavours combine well to make a meal.

I agree with what others have said re: tracking calories. You don't have to track forever, but even doing it for a week or two will give you some idea as to what portions you should be eating and the nutritional/caloric contents of the foods you commonly consume.

Finally, I think cooking and eating at home is very, very important to a healthy lifestyle. It's fine to eat out once in awhile, but you never really know what you're getting. When you cook for yourself you can ensure you're eating healthy whole foods without additives and can make sure that you stay away from processed and pre-packaged convenience foods.

If you're looking for a really good "big picture" read about how to eat healthy, I highly recommend Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food."

I buy lots of frozen veggies, because I read something about cans and bpa. Plus, if I can cook it quick, I'm more likely to eat it. I also buy giant bags of frozen chicken breasts.

I only buy skim milk, no soda, orange juice or cranberry juice (dh loves it), and we have a PUR filter on the faucet.

I also only buy whole grain bread, pasta, rice, etc. I bought a box of white pasta the other day (it was super cheap) and DH and I were so grossed out! lol you get used to the whole grain pretty quick.

Keep healthy things around that are easy and quick - pretzels, carrot sticks, crackers. I tried to buy a package of chips ahoy, but DH eats it in one sitting, so I just don't buy junk food anymore. It was tough at first but I've gotten used to it!

I think the key is portions - for DH, I'll give him one chicken breast and a side of either whole grain pasta or potatoes, sometimes rice or stuffing, and a huge helping of vegetables. If he's still hungry he can go back for more from there, lol.

Try the app "fooducate" (I think that's the name) its pretty neat!

There are some easy substitutions you can start making to your diet, like subbing olive oil for butter, and fat free greek yogurt for full fat sour cream.

What foods does your family like? How open are you to trying different foods, prep style and cuisines?

In winter, we eat a lot of roasted veggies. Its super easy – just cut up squash, sweet potatoes into bite sized pieces, toss with a little bit of olive oil, salt and pepper and put in the oven at 400 for about half an hour (or until they are nice and crunchy on the outside, and tender on the inside). We also love roasted Brussels sprouts, asparagus and garlic done this way. Its super easy, and the only fat content you are adding is olive oil.

Salads are easily dressed up/beefed up by using better greens (iceburg lettuce won’t give you any nutritional value for example, and has no flavor), dried fruits, nuts or seeds, goat cheese or blue cheese crumbles, avocado slices, fresh fruit slices, etc. And for dressing, skip high fat dressings and just use a little olive oil and either a bit of balsamic vinegar or squeeze of lemon juice.

We love whole grains like farro and quinoa. They are easy to cook (they cook similar to white rice), and have tons of flavor and are good for you. They are also easy to manipulate – you can have plain quinoa, lemon quinoa (just add in a couple of tablespoons of fresh lemon juice at the end), quinoa salad (with black beans, onion, jalapeno, avocado, cilantro and lime juice) – that is great with BBQ. Farro salad is one of our favorites – cooked farro with roasted red peppers, onions, eggplant, fennel, olive oil, balsamic, garlic and fresh herbs (basil, mint and parsley).

Fish is easy to prepare – salmon and white fish can be broiled, pan seared or baked quicker than you can heat up frozen and breaded fish portions, and can be dressed up with a number of toppings. Try some lemon and minced Greek olives on top for more Mediterranean flavor, baked with a little pesto sauce on top (easy to make yourself and cheap), pan seared with lemon, broiled with teriyaki sauce, etc.

My main cooking “manta” is that easier is better. Less heavy sauces on veggies and instead prepare them in ways that bring out their own flavor. Buying better veggies (i.e., fresh from farmers market vs. shipping across the country for the supermarket). Buy in season. Roast veggies. Eat more salads that are easy to toss together. Meat done simply and without added fat from butter or creamy sauces.

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone.. I need something simple or else I give up to quickly. Its also hard having DH around because he does physical labor all day and wants to have huge meals at night!

The biggest easiest way is to cut out fatty high calorie foods and add in healthy low cal fruits and veggies. Frozen veggies go OB sale here for $1 per bag. Throw the bag in the microwave and three minutes later you have fresh steamed side dish. Substitue broccoli, cauliflower, beans, etc for a side of fries an you'll see the difference quickly.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains are a start. I think one of the big things is eating at home. In winter I love casseroles and using my slow cooker. They are good because you can use cheap cuts of meat and they come out really tender. Steer clear of processed foods as much as possible ie don't cook the type of casseroles that are based on mayo/canned soup/prepared sauces.

Exercise is important. Walk when you can, maybe do cardio DVDs and try to do strength exercises - they build muscle that kicks up metabolism.
Good luck!

Do you have an iPhone? Tracking your calories is basically the first step. I really like the app "Myfitnesspal". It lets you add in how much you want to lose, tracks activities/exercise and of course what you eat. It's better than a lot of the apps since it's got an almost endless supply of food from the prepared stuff at Trader Joes to meals on menu's at restaurants.

Once you do that adding in healthier options on food and extra activity is a little easier.

I need some ideas on how to go healthy...my family owns a restaurant so I grew up on hamburgers and fries, which was ok at the time because I was very athletic so nothing stuck to my bones. Now I am a mom trying to lose baby weight and I need help!
I have no idea where to even begin!
recipes?
Healthy food that doesn't cost a fortune (money is tight)
any exercising ideas I could do in my home during winter!?
How did you get back to your post baby body!?
