My husband has a very unpredictable schedule. I will be staying home and when I return to work we will have a family member watching our LO. If that doesn't work out I will be in charge of pick up and drop off on the days where DH is unavailable. We will make the schedule as though he will always be unavailable and when he has his days off, he will help out.

My husband is a college professor and it's mandatory that he teaches a certain number of night classes each quarter. Most quarters he is working three nights a week. He only has to put in 42 hours, thankfully, but three days a week he works 12 hours, from 10am-10pm. One day last quarter he worked a 14 hour day! It's rough, being home ALL day alone, and can get really lonely. But I've been doing it for 1.5 years now. It's hard to find the motivation to do real things during the day, like cook or clean when I know he won't be here to appreciate it. But I do it anyway

As for childcare, I am a SAHM but if I was working we'd probably do daycare for my hours (if I was working normal hours), or else a nanny. I've been a nanny for many, many years and there are so many great benefits to them.

DH's work schedule isn't odd perse but it does change a lot from day to day, and depending on the time of year. There might be one day when he works from home, has a light load and is ready to snuggle when I get home at 6pm! Then there are days when he leaves at 6am and I don't see him until 9pm that night. He also travels fairly frequently for work, too. I wish it was more constant, but I know that he actually enjoys it, so it's good for our relationship.

DH is military.... enough said. He gets sent away randomly at short notice, deployments, working weird hours, on call on weekends, etc. I'm a stay-at-home mom so it's more like I'm a single parent sometimes and a wife/mom sometimes.

Dh has been traveling almost full time for the last 5 months. He would leave Monday night and come home Thursday morning. :( every stinking week. I thought his traveling days were over, but he picked up another out of state contract. Now he leaves Sunday night and returns Thursday night.
I had a mini melt down last night because being a "single" mom while pregnant isn't fun or easy.
My family lives out of state so i don't have any help either.
The only thing getting me through this is my Lo, Skype, and the fact that this is temporary!
Dh took on about 250k worth of debt when he married me. Damn my student loans! He's worked hard to pay it off in 2 years!
He's not gonna travel anymore once #2 arrives so I just need to suck it up for 6.5 more months!
Phew. Pulled a @mrswagon and wrote a novella! Hahaha

I have a very unpredictable schedule. For now so is a stay at home dad, but he's looking at going back to work. Our best likely option is a nanny to cover my very weird hours.

DH is possibly going to be cut from his school at the end of the year. The budget didn't pass and it's uncertain what the outcome will be, but he already received a letter that his job is in jeopardy.

DH is considering other jobs that he could do or get trained/certified for, but most come with odd schedules/hours. Like working 70 hour weeks for 2 weeks then having a week off.

Any bees have a job, or have a DH with a job, with an untraditional or rotating schedule?

How do you handle daycare? I haven't looked at options in my area for more flexible care yet, since it is hypothetical, but it is a concern of ours. How do you deal with stretches of time where you are the primary caregiver while your SO is working? I know that my routine would have to change significantly, but I worry about not having help from DH like I'm used to.
