So, I DID IT!!!!

I was a bit intimidated by all the parts that I had to take apart and boil to sterilize and put back together. But once I got it together, it seemed easy and I pumped 3 ounces from my left breast. Baby had just fed off the right one (he's a one boob at a time baby). After I finished the pumping, which seemed pretty fast but I didn't time it, then I tried pumping the one that the baby had already used and I got NOTHING. I guess baby is pretty good at emptying it afterall. (I always wondered).

@Thehistoryofus: Hmm, I didn't even realize that the pump has a battery! I just plugged it straight into the wall and assumed it needed to be plugged in. The battery option will come in handy.

Can't wait to pump again! I'm going to do it tomorrow morning! :)

@regberadaisy: I was worried about her wanting to eat after I pumped, but my LC assured me that you are continuously making milk. So even if you let her nurse right after pumping, the baby will get milk because you're making more and the pump never gets it all.

Remember to charge it up! My freestyle needed to be charged (without use) for 24 hours to get the battery fully prepped.

so i opened the box, but LO is on an 'eat all the time' and 'only sleep on Mom's chest' pattern this evening, so that's as far as I got. I plan to read the whole instruction book before I start. I'm not in a big rush, but I'll do it tomorrow for sure.

@cvbee: Oh! Just a warning - If it hurts when you pump, you might need a different size shield. Most women need to go a size up, but I actually had to go a size down.

@BabyBoecksMom: usually I'd pump until the flow slowed almost to a stop, then a few minutes later I'd get a second letdown. It took longer when I first started, and didn't always happen in the beginning.

@mrs. wagon: How long before you get a second let down? I will pump until there's nothing coming out, but I only feel one letdown per pumping/feeding session.

After pumping, hand express the remaining amount of milk (all that massaging before and during pumping helps get that milk moving but there is still more to be had)! Also, I always used nipple cream (Motherlove, EMAB, some people like plain olive oil or lanolin) on my aureola so any friction with the flange isn't quite as painful.

I'm new to pumping too. I don't have any advice to give because I don't really know what I'm doing either. Just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one intimidated by pumping.

I was told to pump on the side they weren't eatting from since letdown happens in both and you can pump more milk that way. Also second what @MrsWagon & @TheHistoryofUs said.

Always massage your breasts while you pump! Always wait for a second let-down! Always continue pumping until no milk is coming out anymore! :) good luck!!!

I think the biggest tip I got from a LC was to massage your breast, particularly at the beginning to get things "flowing". It really does help.

Well, I'm feeling a bit intimidated as I'm about to open my breast pump for the first time. LO feeds just on one breast per feeding, so I should pump the other one after (or at the same time?) right?

Any tips for a beginner pumper? (I'll be using Medela Swing single electric).
