I guess it would depend on how fussy/fancy a wedding it was, and how she would feel if I had to back out.

I been to weddings where that would've been no big deal at all (my own included) and to weddings where it would've been a crisis to have a mismatched number of honor attendants and a hole in the seating chart.

I don't think I would do it, but one of my bridesmaids was 1 week PP at my wedding
When she found out her due date, I told her I completely understood if she couldn't be a bridesmaid, but I'd still love to have her if she was up to it.

@pui: my due date was August 12 (LO was born on the 13th) and I was the maid of honor in my friends wedding September 7th. It was humbling because I felt huge and hard because I was breastfeeding but I would do it again in a heartbeat. It meant a lot to my friend, and it was just one rough day. It helped that I was able to bring my daughter with me.

No way in hell. I was such a mess until 6 wks PP. It took at least 4 wks to heal "down there" enough that I could walk without wincing, and I battled mastitis 2x in the first 6 wks. No way no way No way

My cousin was for me at 5 weeks PP. She never had any issues that I was aware of, but it was a very busy day for me so I might have just not been aware. It wasn't her first though, and she wasn't breastfeeding, so I'd think both of those factors would make a difference. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless it was someone I was VERY close to (and that was the case with my cousin).

I wouldn't have been able to. Maybe ask if you can do a reading or something like be a greeter. I had a hard time standing that long still at 4 weeks. Oh and still had limited bladder control then too. YAY POSTPARTUM (ugh! Worth it though!)

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I think I will respectfully decline being a bridesmaid. I'm just super nervous about it, especially being a first time mum. I do feel kind of bad because her sister is also pregnant and due shortly before I am and will not be a bridesmaid either. (although she's the one who insists on getting married this September).

I'm already going to be doing her engagement pics and the design for her STDs and invitations. I'll also probably throw her a shower (We're thinking the shower will be in July or early August). Hopefully she understands!

I would have been totally okay to have been in a wedding a month after giving birth AND I had a baby who was easy in the newborn days but you really can't know what your experience will be like until you're going through it so I'd probably have to say no if it were me.

No way.

I was a bridesmaid 3 months pp, and even that was tough! If you want to breastfeed, you will be breastfeeding around the clock at that time and it will be a challenge to either step away to pump, or bring your newborn with you everywhere. Also, the baby may not even have gotten his one month shots at that time. I was also constantly exhausted at one month and still in some pain from the tearing.

Too many what-ifs like others have mentioned.

No way!!

What if baby doesn't like bottles and is early and going through the 6 week growth spurt? Pretty sure you don't want to stand up and nurse while she says I do.

One of my bridesmaids was 5 weeks pp. Flew up from Georgia (we're in PA). I could not believe she did it. But she did. And it was amazing and I love her so dearly for it. We didn't have a child-friendly wedding, but we allowed hand-held infants, mostly because of her and her baby. Poor girl couldn't fit into her dress at first and had to pump in the bathroom in the hotel room while we were getting portraits taken. Man, I really need to thank her again. Rock.Star.

All that to say...it CAN be done. But that's your EDD - who knows if you'll actually deliver on that date. You could be a week or 2 late! 4 weeks is one thing. 2 weeks....? I dunno. I'd probably say I'm really flattered and honored that she wants to include me, but I am afraid to commit to it and offer to do a reading or something that requires less of a time commitment from you.

IF the baby is perfectly on time, that would still be a big challenge. I think I would rather play it safe and offer to be a part of it in some other way, as others have suggested.

Physically I would have been able to do it no problem. But the logistics of a baby who wants to nurse constantly would be really tough to work around. If you aren't planning on breastfeeding I would do it.

I'd thank her but explain that it is a very unpredictable time and will be hard for us even to commit to attending the wedding. I can't imagine being responsible for bridesmaid duties in the last weeks of pregnancy (or with a premie baby in the NICU). Any reasonable person should understand.

I wouldn't if declining wouldn't cause too much friction. If the baby arrives late you will still be recovering and your body will be changing so much that even the logistics of getting a dress fitted will be quite difficult. If it's going to cause a lot of drama, maybe you could agree with the understanding that your bridesmaid duties will be very limited and you'll need to bring someone to help out with the baby?

I would say no because there are so many what ifs. What if you are late? What if you have a preemie who needs extra care? Rough recovery? C-section recovery? BF issues? Total PP hormonal shit show? With my son, there is no way I could have done it. With my daughter I potentially could have.

Personally, I would rather have a smaller role in the wedding. At 4 weeks PP, I was still a wreck. While I could have taken LO to a wedding, he was an extremely colicky baby and it would have been pretty stressful to be a bridesmaid. I also had an emergency C-section, so I was still a bit tender a month out.

On the one hand, I would have been fine a month after I delivered. On the other hand, I delivered ten days late, and then my baby was in the hospital for a week. So four weeks after my due date, she'd only been home for less than two weeks. Keep that in mind, that you may well go late.
