I was induced two days before my due date. I'd been stuck at 1.5-2cm dilated for weeks and was 70% effaced.
I had the cervadil around 9pm, my water broke naturally around 1-2am and the contractions kicked into high gear. I had back labor, so I got an epidural. Around 8am, I was 10cm dilated and ready to push. Never even needed the pitocin.
The L&D staff was surprised by how quick my induction went - they said I was abnormal in a good way :-)
When my OB came to visit the next day, she said based on how quickly it went, I probably would have gone into labor naturally over the weekend. But I was so uncomfortable/swollen/etc., I was just glad to have the baby out!

I was induced at 40weeks 4 days due to extremely low fluid. They started out with cervidil, and then followed up with pitocin. The induction ultimately failed and I ended up with a semi-emergency c-section. I really wanted to avoid a c-section but had no choice

@TurtleDoves: So, if a vaginal or any kind of natural labor is important to you, I would suggest really educating yourself on this issue. The idea of inducing because of a possibility of low fluid and malpositioning is really unfortunate. An ultrasound can tell you if you have low fluid (as I did, and it did require an immediate induction), and it can also tell you about the baby's position. But inducing to prevent those things is a very bad idea - it doesn't improve outcomes. If your fluid and position are still good, the risks of induction still outweigh the benefits.

There are medical reasons not to let a woman go past 42 weeks (which is standard here in the UK, I know it's more like 41 in the states). After that point, you are dealing with low fluid, decomposition of the placenta, decreased flow of nutrients and blood to the baby, etc. There is a certain point that it becomes VERY dangerous to go past. Also, she didn't ask for people to tell her not to get an induction. She asked for people that had had one to give their experience.

@MrsBeachyBaby: Good luck! Keep us updated on what happens. :) I hope baby decides to make an appearance all on it's own before intervention is necessary.

FWIW I'm in New Zealand and our statistics show that first time Mum's go into labour at about ten days overdue.

I'm currently three days overdue and if I make it to ten days over I'll go up to the hospital for a post dates assessment (thirty minutes of foetal monitoring, ultrasound to check fluid levels, blood tests) and if everything's ok then my midwife won't induce until I'm fourteen days over.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do but if I was in your shoes I'd wait as long as was safe.

I was induced at 41weeks. Originally went in for a check up at 40w5d and the ob wanted me to go in for a NST and fluid level check. Went in at 7:30am on Friday, fluid was low. Was already 2 cm and about 75%, so they started me on pitocin.

Dr broke my water around 4pm, got my epidural at 7pm (only 3cm), was 6cm by 9pmish, felt pressure at 3am, started pushing at 4:30am, and lo was born at 5:17am. It went well.

My situation was completely different because I was induced since we miscarried at 20 wks. I had Cervadil and they started it at 5:30 p.m., my water broke around 4:00 a.m.ish and I delivered at 4:30 a.m. I didn't have to dialate to 10 cm, but I do know that my body responded well to cervadil. They told me that some people in my situation take up to 24-36 hours to deliver.

@Minnie_Girl: agreed!!

I was induced, but I'm still in the camp of if there is no medical reason pressing for an induction - why go through that. Inductions are really hard and often can be even more difficult because baby isn't always ready.

I really don't think that going past 40-41 weeks is all that bad as long as you're not excessively gaining weight or other medical issues.

I am SO mad that I got induced. I know I had no choice (medical condition) but I SO wish my body could have done what it was made to do and just waited for it come naturally. I was showing signs for weeks, and had been having contractions consistently the whole week. I was so excited and it was shattered the day they called me into the hospital. Labor was hellish and the worst experience of my life. My mom has had 6 children and said that her one induction was worse than all of the other 5 combined. She remembers that birth the most.

I was 4cm when I was induced, so it did go quickly and my body responded well so I was happy about that.

@TurtleDoves: hm... I must say I can't agree with "then maybe it's not going to happen naturally". I think it always will happen naturally eventually but we generally don't have the patience for it. I think of all the errors that could have happened - such as underestimating the EDD. I also think that not everyone is 40 weeks and done. Some are done earlier, some are done later and that is just normal variations from person to person. I think it's so important to let baby come on their own if possible :)

As @sarac: mentioned: "everyone does eventually go into labor"...yes this is very true....however, my doctor said the risks start getting a little bit high after 41w and especially at 42w...regarding low fluid and no space for baby....which can lead to a bad position and him/her not being able to descend properly....or being sideways and you ending up in c-section...or having his legs bent up towards his head....all kinds of things she said that are not "harmful" per se to the fetus but are going to be roadblocks if you wish to deliver vaginally.

@MrsBeachyBaby: I don't have a story of induction but I am in a similar situation....my doctor said if you are where you are 40+ then an induction is most likely going to be your outcome anyways....She is checking me again on Monday and if I haven't progressed significantly then i'm being induced Monday night because she figures...i've stalled.
I'm scared too....but I mean if it's 4 days passed and no labor...then maybe it's not going to happen naturally.
I know the lady I babysat for had to be induced with every.single.child. She has 4!!! She never went into spontaneous labor: ever! Always was super late. Her inductions all ended in a vaginal delivery though :) Happy ending:)

I was induced at 40w1d due to pre-e. I got cervidil, 11 hours later I turned over in bed and my water broke. That sent me into labor pretty much immediately. DS was in a bad position so they talked about trying to turn him. I was given an epidural to try to turn him, no go. I did give birth vaginally with the help of the vacuum and episiotomy. The induction went well, it was just DS's position that complicated things.

I was induced because my water broke but the contractions didn't start on their own. I had similar stats as you at that point. I was given pitocin around noon or so, progressed to 5 cm early that evening, and late that evening had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

i was considered high risk at 38 weeks and was induced, starting with cervadil, and the saline drip was dripping so quickly, i had to pee so bad but they wouldn't let me for nearly 2 hours, i asked them to slow down the drip, but waiting to pee when i had to go so badly was torture. after 9 hours will little progress, they started the pitocin, after 90 minutes, things went quickly from there, they broke my water. and then, i started feeling the contractions coming hard and asked for an epidural. i labored for about 45 minutes, and she was born. my induced experience wasn't too bad for me.

Induced at 41 weeks due to low fluid. 50% effaced, no dilation. 12 hours on cervadil, which put me into active labor. No pain meds. At the end of the 12 I had no dilation, no change in effacement, and my baby had poor heart tones. So I had a foley cath induction, and a ton of other crummy interventions. I eventually managed to deliver (36 hours later) vaginally, so at least there is that. But my induction was hell, honestly. I would not choose it again if there were any other option.

I'm curious as to what your doctor means by not expecting any movement. Going to and past 41 weeks is the norm for first time moms. Everyone does eventually go into labor. Can you wait past that point if a non stress test is all good?

I was induced when I was 40 weeks and 6 days. I had to get cervadil. They put it in me (it looked like a tampon string, so weird!) at about 9pm. I remember the time because it had to be in me for 12 hours and all I wanted was an epidural but they couldn't check me while it was still up there. I went from nothing to 6 cm in that twelve hours. It was PAINFUL! The following morning I got pitocin and and epidural. My daughter was born less than 24 hours after the induction. Unfortunately I ended up with a c-section, but it was because my DD never really dropped. I was 10 cm and pushed for over an hour, but she didn't make any progress.

I have to admit, that if I were to do it again, I would have pushed to try to wait to go into labor naturally. I hated that I ended up with a c-section, and I can't help but wonder if my DD just wasn't ready to come out. However, I was also very uncomfortable and unhappy (she ended up being 9lbs 6oz. that is VERY heavy hahaha)

Good Luck!

It sounds like there's no reason to get an induction--you're fine, baby's fine, and you're still in a completely normal time frame for going into labor. You'll probably go on your own in the next week anyway...why not tell your doctor you want to wait it out? Could work out better than taking the risk of induction.

I was induced at 40+4 after my water broke and my body didn't go into natural labor. My cervix was less than 1cm dilated and still high and thick. They inserted Cervadil and let it do it's thing. It burned a little at first but it passed quickly and I went to sleep. They started Pitocin 6 hours after the Cervadil. Not much happened at first but it took off pretty quickly. They started Pitocin at 3am. At 6am, I was 2-3cm dilated. At 9am, I was fully effaced and by 12, I was 10cm.

From there some unrelated complications came into play but I did end up delivering vaginally. I will say... I probably would do the epidural if you end up induced. Pitocin is the devil and it's not something I'd do without medication willingly. My epidural failed and I labored with it for 15 hours. It was hell. My best advice is to relax and get the epidural. (This is from someone who wanted a natural, intervention-free birth)

If your nst look good have you considered just waiting?... Since you don't have other health issues. If there ARE other health issues then that would make sense to induce since baby would be suited better out of the womb, but if not & all looks well there really is no reason not to wait since generally the risks of an elective induction outweigh its benefit.

With DS I was basically induced (augmented prodromal labor) and it ended in cesarean due to failure to progress & fetal distress. With DD I went to 41+4 before labor started (I had been maybe 1 cm, soft, high, & not effaced since 36 wks) and had her naturally at 41+5. It was a much better experience than my first go round.

Of course research all your options & GL with whatever you decide. :)

I was induced because I was considered high-risk. I went in on the evening of 39 weeks 4 days to start Cervadil and gave birth the following evening. You can read my birth story here:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/baby-vs-birth-story-long
I honestly hated the overall experience of my induction, but I'm glad I was in a controlled environment. If you plan on getting an epi, get it as early as you can. I didn't want one but eventually caved. It was so much relief. I agree, my Pitocin contractions were horrible. My dosage kept getting increased because my contractions were irregular. It's probably different for each person, but it's not what I was expecting. With all that being said, keep in mind that inductions don't have to be bad!

i was induced at 40 weeks 6 days. i was barely 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. they started me on pitocin about 10am and had my water broken not long after that. still wasn't making any progress. baby's heart rate would drop everytime i stood up to use the bathroom so my drip got shut off a couple of times. contractions started to get bad and i requested an epidural. still wasn't progress by 7:30 pm i was barely 3 cm. once i got my epidural baby's heart rate dropped again and it was off to the OR for a c-section due to my lack of progression and the baby's heart rate doing 'funky things'

I was induced at 39 weeks, 2cm dilated and would easily do it it again. I went in at 8am, Dr broke my water at 8:30am and started me on pitocin. Got my epi at 10:30am(3cm dilated) and was fully dilated by 12:30pm. DD was still too high so I labored down till 4pm. I started pushing at 4pm and DD was here at 6:14pm. Goodluck! One thing I learned was that epi does not slow down labor if you're on pitocin, had I known that I would've gotten the epi right away (pitocin contractions suck!)

Has anyone been induced? Care to share your story? I am currently 40 weeks and 4 days. At my appt. yesterday we discussed the possibility of an inducement at the end of the week. The baby is doing great and everything was good with my non stress test. I am 2 cm dilated and 70% effaced. I have been for 3 weeks and my doctor does not expect movement next week if I show no signs at the end of the week. It will either be cervidil or pitocin depending on my dilation at the next visit. Just curious how many of you have had to be induced and your story from it? Thanks I really appreciate it!
