Honestly, I stressed out about this a lot in the beginning, but then I realized as long as I eat (smart) foods when I'm hungry and don't overdo it with nasty stuff, and as long as I'm gaining weight on track (around 1 pound/week in the second tri), I don't need to tirelessly track every calorie and food group to make sure I'm getting everything just right.

@Arden: hahaha I did that! I found that healthy foods generally werent high in calories... however they are higher in NUTRIENTS which I think is the point... not the cals haha :)

@Arden: I'm with you! I just had a slice of pizza and a brownie. :P

@blackbird: I think as long as you're eating ~200-300 calories more than normal, you're fine. I don't really think about how much I'm eating and generally eat about the same as I did pre-pregnancy, except now instead of water with dinner, I'll have a glass of milk, and make small adjustments. As long as I'm not letting myself go hungry, I figure the baby will be just fine.

*sigh* I'm sitting here eating potato chips, trying to justify it by the fact that they have 460 calories. I should go eat some salad and yogurt now.

@mountainmama: no she didn't!! I was really confused. At my birth center I alternated seeing two different midwives and I should have run it by the head midwife just to make sure.

@blackbird: yeah I had heard only extra 300 cals which I could deal with! Imagine doubling what you ate :p

I opted for some high calorie filler foods like nuts.

I would definitely NOT worry about weight gain/what you're eating unless your doctor indicates it's a problem, or if you're not feeling well (low energy, constantly hungry, etc). Your body will gain what it needs, and regardless of what you're eating, the baby will take the nutrients it needs from your body (just like a little parasite, lol :) ). So don't stress about the calorie amount!

@mountanmama, I'm hungry, too! But then I'm good after I eat, for a few hours anyways. In the first tri, i wanted food 24/7. Now i'm on my regular snack/food schedule. So bizarre.

3,000 calories?! HOLY CRAP. Everything I can find says your pre-pregnancy maintenance weight plus 300 calories for the second trimester, which is really more like 2500 for me, but it's just TOO MUCH. So i went with 2300. And I'm falling short. More like 2000, with my net caloric intake being lower on days I exercise. Even though you were stuffing yourself, pretty awesome you only put on 36!

My midwife told me I needed 3000 calories a day!! OMG I was appalled. I tried so hard to get there and ended up stuffing myself most days.

I gained 36 lbs and I wish I had just only eaten what I wanted and when I was hungry, I may have gained less. Kinda peeved that I was told to eat so much when that was double what I normally ate.

Yeah, i was thinking about how women lose weight and don't eat as much and yet they're still OK. I just don't want to inadvertently not provide enough nutrients. And obviously I've put it on a little quicker, anyways, so it's not like my body refuses to put any on :P I find i feel icky if i eat too big of a meal, though. It just sits in my stomach SO LONG and takes forever to break down!

@mountainmama, It's 2% Greek yogurt. So it is quite filling! I do have apple butter at my desk (I wouldn't bring milk to work, weirds me out, haha). But then I definitely wouldn't be hungry for lunch! As it is, lunch is in 30 min and I'm still full from my apple.

Are you eating full fat dairy? Switching to that could be an option, and they often have less sugar than the lower fat versions.

Also- nut butter! Pre-pregnancy I'd just have an apple for a snack, now I have it with peanut butter and maybe a glass of milk.

There is a book called Natural Pregnancy that had a helpful chapter on nutrition, and included some "sample diets" with nutritionist critiques. After reading that I made an effort to increase leafy greens at both lunch and dinner.

It looks like you are eating very healthy meals. Maybe bring some sample food diaries with you to the doctor? If you are gaining/growing fine then I'm sure they won't be worried.

My focus has been trying to meet nutritional goals, rather than caloric ones. Seems like you're eating a pretty balanced diet!

Just some random ideas :)

Same problem here. I don't even take in enough calories for a non-pregnant person. Yesterday I ate...

Breakfast: Yogurt cup and two apple taquitos.
Lunch: Bowl of green beans.
Dinner: Two tacos, spanish rice, and potato wedges.

And that was a good day!

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and I've gained MAYBE a pound or two. Sigh...

I think as long as you eat when you're hungry, you'll be fine. Also, your appetite will probably pick up in the next few weeks! Even if it doesn't, stuffing your face is not the answer--sounds like you're eating a pretty balanced diet. Donuts are always nice, though. :) It couldn't hurt to ask your doctor, but think of how many healthy babies have been born over the years to people who didn't religiously log their calories...I think the baby will get the nutrition that he/she needs as long as you're not starving yourself.

my doctor told me that you really only need an additional 200 or so calories on top of your pre-pregnancy diet which is easy to get because one cup of yogurt is about that much. I also struggled to eat enough in the beginning but by the end I had gained a whopping 45lbs so dont worry too much about it

I get hungry like clockwork, but choose smart foods. I was ravished in my first trimester....now I'm almost 16 weeks and I'm just not as hungry. I can't eat too much before bed or I get indigestion, so that meal is small. But when I add up my calories for the day, I'm finding that I'm short of the ~2,300 I 'should' be having.

Today I've had/have planned:
Breakfast: Apple cider and Greek yogurt
Snack: A honeycrisp apple and two mini Twix bars
Lunch: Homemade chili on elbow noodles, with mozzarella and sour cream. Red seedless grapes
Snack: Greek yogurt
Dinner: TBD

Before dinner, I'm at about 1400 calories. I won't eat 900 calories at dinner, either. Oh, and today's a non-exercise day.

Anybody else having a similar issue? I put a little more weight on the first 15 weeks (I'm up 13 lbs now, but it seems to be all baby belly), so I'm just wondering if this is my body's way of balancing out, so I don't pack on too many.

Theoretically, I want to say that as long as I eat when I'm hungry and choose nutritionally dense foods, I'm providing plenty of nutrients. My husband says I should have a donut, but I don't think that will help :) I see my doctor on Thursday, so I'm going to ask her. I don't like the feeling of just stuffing myself if I'm not hungry. But I know my husband is concerned that my caloric intake is falling short. This looks really close to my pre-pregnancy ways of eating.
