My kids do this. When my son was taking benadryl at night to help with drainage/coughing, I would wait until he woke up around midnight to give it to him so the dose would wear off closer to morning.

I have really bizarro dreams when I take Benadryl - or anything with a sedative effect. Maybe she's the same?

@Happygal: oh man. That's a lot of factors! So sorry.

I heard back from our pediatrician who thought it was probably not related but said to try not giving it to her tonight and see if it happens or not.

@Foodnerd81: ack! Crazy timing. DD has an ear infection #2 of the year and had some kind of reaction--whether it's viral or an amoxicillin allergy, we're not sure. But since she broke out in hives, we gave her Benadryl at the advice of our pediatrician. She went down almost an hour earlier, but I was still surprised to hear her in her crib from at least 10-11:30ish jibber jabbering away. She would cry out every now and then, but since I didn't see her stand up on the monitor, I didn't go in to check on her. This morning I discovered she had thrown up (no idea if this happened last night or this morning). I'm wondering if it was the Benadryl. She also seems slightly constipated, which I'm guessing is from benadryl, too. And since she stopped her ABX early, I'm concerned about her ears. So many factors going on at once!

@Mrs. Lion: oh poor kids. Ear infections just suck. I'm hoping to avoid a third round of antibiotics in 4 months this way...

I definitely think it shortens the duration that they are painful. Both of my kids have tubes and still get ear infections even with the tubes in (seriously) but i do think it shortens the duration.

@Foodnerd81: kids are ao hard to figure out. I dont know if you get a weird groggy feeling after you nap, but i think my son does sometimes and i definitely do. She may feel just a little disoriented after sleeping really hard, and if shes uncomfortable with getting sick it might just translate to weird fussiness <3

@Mrs. Lion: I think they are all in- no more after 2 and a half, right? Could be the sleeping harder, and I know I have a sore throat from this cold so she might too.

We use benadryl often for the same reason and i do notice that my son sleeps harder and therefore sometimes wakes a little earlier, but i havent experienced what you are describing. Any chance there are also teeth coming in?

@Adira: she isn't acting like she's in pain though. It's really more like waking up from a bad dream. I mean I have been fooled thinking she didn't have an ear infection before, but this seems different- if she wakes up on the early side (like 2-3) she goes back to sleep pretty quickly, I just have to snuggle her for a few minutes. But once it's too close to morning she is up for the day and that sucks.

My guess is that the Benadryl wears off around that time and so she's waking up, and her ears hurt from the ear infection. Poor kid. :(

Oh and it's not unusual for her to wake up during the night crying for me every once in a while, it is unusual front to happen three nights in a row.

C (2.5 years) had some fluid that was starting to get infected in one ear, at her last checkup, so our pediatrician recommended we try a dose of Benadryl at night to help it dry up and avoid needing another round of antibiotics- she's had two ear infections already since January. I gave it to her at bedtime with no issue (I know some kids get hyper).

However every night that I've given it to her she has woken up really early (between 2 and 5 am) crying for me, like she had a nightmare or something, but she never says what the problem is. She calms down quickly but can't always fall back asleep.

Have you heard of this or experienced this as a side effect of Benadryl? I'm checking in with her ped today too.

(She didn't recommend tubes for her ears at this point because up until January she had only ever had one ear infection in her 2.5 years, and she will hopefully outgrow it before next cold and flu season. But if it continues we could discuss it again).
