@macintosh: I've found that if it doesn't directly affect the people in the company that you are talking to or it isn't affecting a majority, people do not care. People only care about themselves and the company's bottom line. If you can find a majority that this is affecting and go in together (like @mama bird suggested) you will have a better shot at fighting this or finding another solution.

@Mama Bird @kiddosc: So much is happening around this issue. I talked to one colleague today who is new. She has a foster child and an infant both in the waiting list for the daycare and now they’ve pulled this rate increase on her. I’m also aware of a handful of other employees who have been taking and researching the new company and the county subsidized discount and it sounds super shady. I spoke to one woman today who had written up a lengthy and professional email and chose to send it directly to the CEO and VP of our org, as well as the higher ups from the new company. She asked for a parent meeting to clear up all the pricing, discount, and policy questions. I’m hoping our agency takes action to make up for this.

@macintosh: I really think @Mama Bird: is right. This was a cut in compensation to a lot of employees. I would try to bring in a small but decent sized group of people together so that the company can grasp the scope. If you go in alone, I'm worried that you may get the "if we do this for you, then we'd have to do it for everyone" line... when really they need to do it for everyone.

And as much as it shouldn't be an issue, I'd try to make it a mixed gender group.

I read this blog called AskAManager, and the author talks over and over about the power of pushing back as a group. Since you're not the only one affected, would the other moms be willing to go to HR with you, numbers in hand? Good luck.

@jennlin821: thank you! I plan to get my contract from the new ownership and take it to HR. I have no immediate plans to have more kids, but that might change. I think the org really underestimated how much this would affect the parents - majority women - who work for them. It feels like a slap in the face.

I think you need to act as if this is a pay cut.

You took this job because of the entire compensation package. Salary + Benefits = Compensation. Therefore negotiate as if it were a pay cut. Lay out the specific number for them and the ask how they are going to 'cure' the deficit.

A one-time bonus will work for this year, but what about next year? They need to give you money for this, one way or another.

DO NOT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK!

I agree with the one time bonus idea. That’s hard to do when the business itself is hurting for some reason but this sounds independent of that? It’s also pretty common when coming to a new job, that they would “make you whole” on benefits or bonuses you might be losing by switching. Not exactly the same but in the same ballpark. I’m sorry they aren’t being more sympathetic overall.

@lindseykaye: Thank you. The really frustrating part is this discount change is directly impacting at least 3 other moms that I work with in the same way. It's become clear that HR never considered this scenario as I've begun asking questions.

Continuing the discounted tuition through the school won't be an option because the new owners (a local chain) won't honor it and say they have no obligation to. They also just raised the tuition from what it was before the acquisition of our centers, of course.

I think asking for a one time bonus would be the best strategy at this point. I will want to negotiate a promotion/salary increase at some point put now probably isn't the best time.

I just reinforces my belief that nothing is fair - especially in business - and you have to fight for it.

You could also attempt to recoup some of the cost via a one-time bonus rather than work it into the salary.

I'm sorry this is so frustrating. It is really disappointing when something you thought was secure is suddenly taken away from you. Benefits like this mean so much and I agree you should advocate for yourself to try and recoup this loss of income based on the changes they've made.

The option that I would try to negotiate first would be the continuation of the benefit directly via discounted tuition rates for the remainder of your current child's enrollment. Trying to negotiate this into your salary somehow may be difficult because it would be sustained after your child is no longer attending (so possibly a no-go from them for this reason).

It's going to be hardest to just start the conversation and put it out there. Best of luck!

I posted a couple weeks ago that my employer (non-profit) sold their daycares, one of which my son attends at a considerable employee discount. Today I found out exactly how much they are screwing us over.

They have restructured the discount we are offered resulting in an increase of $400 per month. This will be an additional $2000 over the course if the next 5 months until my son goes to kinder.

Besides being extremely disappointed in the way they handled everything, I think I deserve to be compensated for the loss of this benefit. I accepted my position and took a pay cut knowing my son would have heavily discounted (and high quality!) preschool for 2 years.

Any advice for how to negotiate this with my boss and HR? I successfully negotiated my starting salary but my salary is still very low for my field because it’s a nonprofit.
