you have to get a lunchbox that enables you to hold the bento upright, and not sideways like most lunchboxes. this is the one we have, but the velcro is already starting to weaken.

http://www.amazon.com/Originals-Good-Lunch-Sack-Blissful/dp/B00472MNF2/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1332859886&sr=8-16

look for the dimensions of the lunchbox and lunchbag to make sure that it fits.

at charlie's daycare they will heat up the food in the microwave, but many daycares will not. some kids are fine eating cold foods, or you can pack items that will keep at room temp. when we are out and about with charlie, i use an ice pack and our insulated diaper bag to keep his bento fresh.

@mrbee: Any recommendations of brands to look for with dividers?

I am thinking about starting to pack some lunches for us to "practice" for LO when she's ready. Plus I could really see how it would be healthier.

You can get bentos with actual plastic separators, so everything stays in place!

We heat up soups really hot and then put them in a separate thermos... but put the rice and chicken in the bento which is stored in the fridge (so it's served cold).

I used to take bento lunches to school and things stayed put unless they were loosely packed.
I took rice, chicken and etc and just ate them cold/at room temp.
I was thinking about it, and I used to take sandwiches and my bentos to lunch but didn't stick them in a fridge while I was at school. Amazing that the food didn't go bad.

My baby isnt born yet I stillh ave 3 weeks to go to my due date, but I'm very interested in using bento boxes in the future. My question is after the box is packed and the kid carries it off to school, if the box gets shaken up in their bag does everything still stay neatly in place?
Also for older kids who go to elementary school where they wont have access to a microwave do you still pack foods like rice and chicken etc, because I only like eating those foods warm.
