We love our Planetbox. Not cheap but virtually indestructible. We're going on two years and have run it through the dishwasher every night and it's still good as new. Drawbacks are that it's not for hot foods and compartments aren't leak-proof so you can't put runny or watery things. It also might not fit your current lunchbox. Here's an example of a typical lunch (with hummus in the silver container for dipping).

I use the Bentgo Kids box for my son and love it. It actually holds much more than you would think (big appetite) and cleans up easily.

This is super durable and the one I've used and recommend. I've had 2 (keep changing between them) for almost 5 years.
I did see that Groupon that pp mentioned is still available ($19.99) but only in some states.

I got Bentgo Kids boxes for the girls on Prime day, and we love them so far. They're not cheap normally, but Groupon had a special recently too that may still be good?

We use the Easy Lunchboxes for both kids (almost 4 and 18 months) and really love them. They are really cheap, and just two pieces. You can fit a lot in them! For DD I put a half bagel sandwich, cheese stick, applesauce pouch, some kind of fruit and some kind of cracker. For DS I put a hummus sandwich, pouch, fruit and some kind of meat.

@sorrycharlie: I've been on the hunt too for when DD goes to Kindergarten next month. I actually just came back from Target, where we stumbled upon this Sistema brand that seems like a good contender. I picked this little lunch cube - http://www.target.com/p/sistema-lunch-cube-to-go-47-3oz/-/A-50498588 - it stacks so the top level is one square perfect for sandwiches, or a larger entree. The bottom is split in half, so I'm thinking I can put crackers, fruits, etc. there. It was on sale so I got it for $3.50. At that price, I figured I'd give it a try.

Here's the entire Sistema line - http://www.target.com/bp/sistema#sn-50498588

Easy lunch box or something similar is our favorite. Cheap. Three spots but one lid and one bottom.

If you aren't going to be sending hot hot lunches then a Yumbox would work great. We got the lunch size 4 compartment one and I love it. I love not having to use separate Tupperware containers or baggies. I cut her sandwich into 4th and stack them two on top of each other and that leaves room for something on the other half of the big compartment like pirates booty or carrots or other cut up veggies. I usually put cut fruit in the other compartment. I also do cut up ham or chicken or nuggets. Then there's a small round spot for dips or other treats (trail mix or fruit snacks). I got mine from Amazon. I also got a snack size Yumbox for when she goes to summer camp and i do a cut up granola bar and fruit usually.

https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=yumbox&tag=hydsma-20&index=aps&hvadid=40467336114&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17986126750383125146&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=m&ref=pd_sl_9ay5nqm86g_b&gclid=CjwKEAjwq8y8BRCstYTm8qeT9mwSJACZGjUkYgSvP5QXeT6FSpbMH6ffHQkFSozjoKhiiB7eBzE4bhoCK27w_wcB

If you want a hot lunch then the small size thermos container would work

What type of bento box did you use? She has a lunchbox already so just something to go in it. I'm liking the idea of less bags/containers to deal with and wash.

Any good recommendations that won't break the bank?
