@winniebee: we booked a Florida trip for June like 6 months ago and even though it isn't officially there yet, we cancelled because I didn't want to spend the whole trip paranoid. I would say the same about Bermuda in three months time. It could be fine, it could be not fine. If you do book it, get the travel insurance so you an get a doc note to cancel and get your money back (we did not - fail). I feel like the north east has so many options for romantic getaways (b&bs in Vermont, Catskills, etc) or you could do Oregon wine country or any number of gorgeous west coast locations. Xoxo

Oh, I just noticed "long weekend" was in your first sentence, so I change my answer to somewhere a world apart but not too far... As a southern state Zika worrier, I'd just be concerned about the Bermuda situation changing by Fall, but have no basis for that. I would say any of the east coast coastal destinations would probably be equally prone. I'd do travel insurance just because it would be also hurricane season.

We rarely do long weekends so I get the concept, but I don't ever think of doing them! Our most successful one, if you can call it a long weekend still, was departing Thursday, returning Tuesday... That way we got far enough away (6 hours with layovers) and yet had quite a few non-travel days...no jet lag.

My next southern (but not oceanside) romantic getaway dream is here: http://www.blackberryfarm.com

I wouldn't go to Europe for just a long weekend. With travel time and jetlag and whatnot I would want at least 5 full days (plus a travel day on both ends) to make it worth my time/money.

I would probably look into one of the east coast suggestions the other ladies made.

Fall in the German or Swiss alps? Yes please. You can take the train wherever you want, amazing food, easy to do. Def not warm, but those Germans and Swiss know how their way around spas and massages.

@BKCaribBaby: I think Bermuda is considered really safe right now! I'm just wondwring 3 months from now. I went to Grand Cayman in April and saw 2 mosquitos the whole time (but did not go out at all at night really).

Wow...I'm actually in Bermuda now (randomly looking at the internet). I researched this a lot before coming, and I personally felt comfortable given much of the information I read. Also I have seen almost no mosquitoes here, which is pretty surprising for me, and they love to eat me for lunch and dinner.

Also geographically, Bermuda is north of Florida and very far from the Caribbean.

I think we all have to decide individually what is safe for us.

I just went to Spain in May. We are TTC and I was actually more worried about Spain than the Bahamas where we went in June. There have been several travel related incidences of Zika in Spain. I think people travel to Spain from other Spanish speaking Zika affected countries. (For example, this is just an anecdote but I have distant family members who are Cuban and live in Madrid. They travel to Cuba regularly.)

I actually got a few mosquito bites while we were in Spain even though I wore bug spray every day. None in the Bahamas.

I think you'll be even safer in Bermuda because it is even farther from the other affected countries than the Bahamas!

Another vote for Southern Europe in the fall, though I am biased! I live in Georgia and I'm totally paranoid about Zika so that's also part of my reason. You could drop by to see family in Germany and then head to the Mediterranean... so many choices but I'm partial to the Italian coast or South of France. A wonderful idea to plan a romantic getaway for you two!

@winniebee: I missed that it was only for a long weekend - Germany does seem stressful for a very short trip. I think Bermuda is about as far north as North Carolina and doesn't seem to have any warnings right now so you should be fine.

@Trailmix: Right, but those are all travel related, meaning people traveled to Zika-affected areas; they were not bitten by an aedes mosquito in NY.

I think as long as there are no locally born cases (just travel related), I'd feel ok with going. I'd just make sure I'm covered and sprayed at all times!

If you're thinking about Europe, what about Greece? We went last August, and it was incredible. The islands, in particular, are gorgeous and romantic.

Another European idea, if you want a beachy trip, is coastal France. I've been to Nice and Biarritz, on opposite coasts, and both were lovely.

Germany probably wouldn't be as relaxing but I've really enjoyed our side trips in Europe when we've gone to visit family. We either grab a cheap flight on Ryanair or take a train ride to a small town. If you want beaches you could bike around the beaches of Holland - not warm but super cute, or catch a flight down to beaches in Italy, or Germany has lots of really pretty small towns to explore.

@winniebee: This Conde Nast article from March lists a bunch of tropical places that aren't on the CDC list - BVI, Bermuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Cayman Islands, and (surprisingly) Turks & Caicos, several of which I wrongly assumed were out. There may be hope for our tropical getaways after all!

Someone just suggested Bermuda/Bahamas on my post looking for a warm, Zika-free location.....I'm going to research - it seems like based on the latitude (similar to NC, I believe), it might be fine...but I'm not sure if when you get that far off the coast if that changes the climate quite a bit. I'll share anything I find with you here. :)

ETA: I think Europe could be a REALLY romantic trip, if you're into a bit of historic sightseeing and are up for taking a train to another country (like Belgium) for a night or two! But you're right, you'd probably be on the go rather than relaxing.

My husband and I want to get away this fall for a long weekend. We went to Bermuda on our honeymoon and LOVED it. We would love to go back. We just lost a baby late into our pregnancy and don't know if we will TTC again, or when. Given our loss, I don't want to risk anything though, Zika wise. Is Bermuda considered to be on the safe list? There aren't any Zika incidents there....but I would imagine it's a similar risk as Florida, which is sort of near Zika affected areas, but isn't one of them.

We live in New England and would like to do something warm. The other option is to visit my brother in Germany, which doesn't seem romantic or relaxing.

Thoughts?
