Although the Zoli eventually leaked for us and I tossed them, they were the perfect starter cup and I will probably do them again for LO2. Just be careful to clean well in the straw as I've heard of people discovering mold in there.

@MenagerieMama: the Zoli was all my first used. With my second we also used on but she learned on a regular straw first/same time. She much prefers a regular straw over any of the silicone straw cups she has. You'll never know if you don't give her a chance to try!

@Cole: love it! This is just the kind of thing I was looking for.

@anbanan15: that looks genius! If she really can work a regular straw like my DH thinks we'll have to try it.

We just bought these sipsnap silicone covers you put over any glass/cup and insert a regular straw in. Maybe that's an option and then you could use whatever cup you wanted? My LO has been refusing to drink out lf anything but a regular straw.

ETA: might be hard for a 6mo old but down the road after getting used to something like the ZoLi?

Love the Zoli. The trick to avoiding leaks is not to screw the lid on too tight. But he was able to use it by 6-7 months. Also, sippy cup might be a good place for an exception to avoiding plastic. DS really chucks his across the room now.

We have this green sprouts cup which has some plastic but the liquid only touches glass or silicon. The straw is a little tricky to drink from if they are just learning so we may do a take and toss until she learns. It does have a sippy top too.

@MenagerieMama: My LO likes these from Target - they usually have seasonal ones too, so she just got a bunny one for Easter.

Zoli was the easiest for her to learn out of - the water comes up really easily. It leaks for anything else other than water so now that she's older we use Vital baby cups 90% of the item and the Zolis for water occasionally

My LO's first straw cup was a Lollacup. TBH, it's pretty much impossible to avoid plastic...I tried but LO hated the sippy caps for the small Lifefactory bottles and the big one was just way too big (still is at 16 mo). We do have a Thermos Foogo in stainless steel, which she likes, but they're pricey. I think the only real alternative to the SS Foogo is Kleen Kanteen, which I haven't tried. Her favorites are the Munchkin click-lock straw cups because they limit the flow of liquid so she doesn't choke herself by getting too big a mouthful, but those started working a little later on. I don't love that she drinks from plastic cups so much, but I'm not as worried as I was with bottles because she's only getting cold liquids in them. It was the constant heating up of bottles that really made me insist on glass.

It's plastic but the platex lil trainer cup is what taught my LO to use a straw. It's just a little squeezy so you can squeeze a little water up the straw so they can figure it out. But it sounds like your Lo might not need that.

Maybe you could start with something cheap and basic until she has a better handle on things, then get the bigger life factory ones? We use take and toss cups for milk at home, but they leak and she has dropped then and the cap came off, and a stainless steel thermos foogo- still a plastic straw, but the metal is nigh lighter than glass.

@MenagerieMama: Thinking in it, she does use the 12 oz size! Her LO was 12 months when they started using it so I guess the bigger size worked at that point. If sippy cups are an option they do make sippy cup tops for the bottles.

So, LO loves watching us drink and we figured she couldn't figure out how to use a regular straw yet so we let her chew on our cups with straws a couple times since we've been out and about. And...pretty sure LO's first non-BF food/drink might have been root beer! Oops, mom fail. We saw some soda in the straw when we took the cup back from her and DH is convinced she drank some, I don't think so, but either way I want to get her a cup for herself! She's 6 mo and we *just* started solids, doing BLW so far (okay just ate some sweet potato sticks tonight for the first time!).

Big picture I'd like to avoid plastic for her as much as possible (we do glass bottles) but clearly I think this is one area which will be hard! So just want to know what you like to start off with, especially for an LO who seems to have maybe figure out the straw thing already ;)
