You can get a Kazam balance bike for under $50! Kazam v2e Balance Bike, Blue, 12-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QZRS4WI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_b0kYwb7HWABVM our LO used his balance bike for a long time and we will use it for LO2 and once he's done we will just sell it off. So it makes the cost even less if you think about it in those terms.

We got our daughter an eatly rider lite balance bike for her second birthday. She adores it, and will definitely be riding it for another year (she is turning 3 next month), and I anticipate she will move straight to a pedal bike without training wheels. Her balance is great. The reviews on twowheelingtots.com were really helpful in deciding which bike to get. Like @lamariniere said, weight is key. Too heavy and they won't be able to ride it.

I think 2 is too little for a bike with training wheels. If you don't want a balance bike, I'd do a tricycle. Or have you thought about a scooter? We got DS a micro mini for his 2nd birthday and it was perfect.

Whatever you get, buy something lightweight or your LO will have a hard time pedaling it.

We bought our son the schwinn tricycle for his 2nd birthday. It has a few conversions we liked: a removable parent steering rod, foot pegs for the younger years, a basket, and zip backpack. We have lots of hills in our neighborhood so we didn't feel comfortable with a balance bike yet.

He loves it! I think he'll be riding it all by himself this Spring.

I love our balance bike. It's a strider that we got from goodwill. Skuut bikes are cheaper but were too tall for a 2 year old. They can use them for a few years, really. It's pretty neat to see them get going on one! Highly recommend them.

DD used her balance bike for a full 2 years (a long time in terms of kid gear!) and the big upside is that she went straight to a bicycle with no training wheels because her balance was so awesome by that point.

Plus, it will be easy to sell on craigslist when you're finished with it.

ETA I can't remember the brand but it was a wooden frame. So cute.

DS will be 2 next week and we want to get him a bike! I know a lot of people love the balance bikes, but I feel like they are kind of expensive and maybe won't be used very long as opposed to a more inexpensive small toddler bike with training wheels. Can anyone give their experience with either? Links for suggestions would be appreciated as well!
