DS (16mo) got the "Freight Train" board book for Christmas and has already learned a few colors from it. We also love any of the Priddy books - he got a few of the truck/things that move for Christmas and is obsessed.

My son loves this one right now:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1783934409?keywords=first%20words%20dawn%20machell&qid=1451853361&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

And then we just read and re-read his favorites (changes regularly) and point out the things in the pictures, the colors, etc.

This resource had some good information: http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/reading-language/reading-milestones/toddler-language-development-milestones/toddler-reading/

For language development talking and reading are so important. Re-reading books is actually a great thing: it helps foster the connection between the words and the pictures, helping children develop new language. http://www.heatherhaupt.com/2014/06/16/why-kids-need-us-to-read-the-same-book-over-and-over-again/
I just always try to make sure reading is fun. Books don't have to be award winners, or have a certain formula. The most important thing is to interact. Go ahead and read the same book over and over again. If he loves Eric Carle and is really drawn to the animals, seek out some more animal focused books. You can sure try some alphabet books (there's a Hidden Minnesota Alphabet one and a Brian Wildsmith one that were both hits at our house), or some books about shapes and colors, but you can use almost any book if he has some interest. Point out colors as you see them ("Oh, look at this red bird"), and respond to his vocalizations. Or if you see a shape on a page you can point that out. I wouldn't stress too much over specifically working on those concepts at that age. Kids who are curious pick it up pretty organically.

Dd is 21 months and loves this puzzle book she got for Christmas. We've been practicing colors with it. She thinks everything is "Lellow" :silly: http://www.amazon.com/Pantone-Color-Puzzles-Color-Matching/dp/1419709399

I think in this case it's more a question of quantity over quality. Just go to the library weekly and make sure you are not getting the same author every time. Your LO will be exposed to way more words that way than from any single book.

Any of Roger Priddy's First 100 books.

He's learned at least 30 words from them, if not more.

I thought the Richard Scarry books were great for learning words! LO liked being s me to point to things he liked and say words he already knew then he was able to talk through a whole page, then book.

Oops, you said board book which those are not. But the 100/500 word board books were also helpful'

Do you have any board books that you feel were especially helpful with your young toddler learning words, colors, sounds, etc?

For example, my 18mo old loves most of his Eric Carle board books and I feel like he has gotten pretty good at being able to point to the animals in them. (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Polar Bear etc).

His comprehensive is great and he's great at following instructions, but I want to get more books to help him start learning words. He probably has 20ish words at best. He is definitely retaining the meaning of lots of things I didn't even know he knew (like last night he was 5 for 5 for bringing us the correct toys that we didn't even know he knew the names of), so I want to be sure to keep exposing him to new words for when he becomes more vocal.
