I second all the light we cannot see. I've been recommending it to everyone. I had a copy out from the library but I think I'm going to buy it and add it to my permanent collection. I thought it was beautifully written.

I just finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home and it was really good. If you like nonfiction, I'm currently reading Just Mercy, which is very well written but will probably leave you outraged, fair warning.

@Ra: have you read the invisible bridge? It is AMAZING--set in Hungary and Paris during WWII and is very emotional (duh given the subject). So well written.

ETA and Life After Life--also very very good. If you like family sagas, I would also recommend Jane Smiley's trilogy, which starts with Some Luck, and then continues with Early Warning. It follows a family from 1920 I believe--each chapter is 1 year.

@bushelandapeck: @hilsy85: I also read that when pregnant! It was a great book but I thought I would need therapy afterwards. And also...I'll never eat a lychee.

Some of my recent favorites are "We Are Not Ourselves" by Matthew Thomas, "The Green Road" by Anne Enright, and "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel.

@lamariniere: that is one of my favorite genres - just added it to my wish list, thanks!

@Ra: if you like historical fiction (particularly WWII), have you ever read Those Who Save Us? Not a new book, but one that i read years ago and loved. I've also enjoyed some of Robert Goddard's books - In Pale Battalions is one that comes to mind by name.

@MamaCate: I just read the Goldfinch too and loved it!

Off-topic but when did gillian Flynn's dark places become a movie? It's already streaming and I don't feel like a heard anything about it

@Ra: the original author died somewhat recently and his estate authorized publication of a 4th book written by someone else. I thought that it really retained the feel and tone of the original series, so definitely check it out if you liked the trilogy!

I'm in the midst of finishing My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. It's a series of books about two girls growing up in poverty in Post World-War II Naples. So far the first one has been fascinating and I'm really excited to read more about the lives of these women.

@Keybee: I've read Gone Girl and Girl on the Train. I'll check out the other one. Thanks!

@MamaCate: Goldfinch was so good! I started reading it and couldn't get into it at first. Then I tried again a few months later and couldn't put it down!

@lamariniere: I LOVE historical fiction! I'm definitely going to look into that one. I've read the Millenium Series but wasn't aware there was a new one!

@bushelandapeck: I read that a while ago. There is a movie, too. The story was powerful but her writing style was torturous to get through.

@hilsy85: Yeah, that one is definitely not on my re-read list.

@littlebug: It was hard to get into, for sure., Her writing style is unique (and wordy, if you ask me) but the content is what kept me interested and it was totally worth it at the end. @hilsy85: I have a son too...and it has definitely kept me up at night!

Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl is good, but I actually liked her other books (Sharp Objects and Dark Places) more! They recently made Dark Places into a movie, too.

I read All the Light We Cannot See this summer. It was one of the best books I've read in quite some time! It's historical fiction set during WWII.

I read the Millennium Trilogy (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, etc.) earlier this year and the 4th book in the series a month ago. They are pretty gripping if you like thrillers.
