@winter_wonder: The book Comfort and Joy definitely reads like a Hallmark movie. It’s not going to win any awards but it’s a feel-good book with some surprises

@Mrs. Carrot- I just read it yesterday and I do not get the hype. I heard it was becoming a movie or show for Netflix so I'm wondering if I'll like that version more.

I recently enjoyed confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger.

Bumping this! I'm curious about any good backlist books you've read and enjoyed? I'm also looking for a cozy Christmas read if anyone has any recs! I read Seven Days of Us several years ago and loved it, so anything like that would be great!

Recent backlist I've enjoyed:
1. Dear Mrs. Bird - AJ Pearce
2. Miss Jane - Brad Watson

Newer:
1. The Authenticity Project - Clare Pooley

A book that I read that I absolutely hated, even though it's getting huge buzz - Leave the World Behind. I keep seeing countless reviews about how it's such a modern-day reflection of race relations and societal dynamics and I am so utterly confused after having read the book. If someone has read it and thought otherwise, maybe we can talk about it?

Yay book posts! Some of my recent favorites:

Mexican Gothic - creepy but not too creepy (I'm not big on horror and this was just about comfortable for me)

One to Watch
The Immortalists
Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop
Fighting Words (meant for a middle grade/young YA audience but a beautiful read on a tough subject matter)
There There
Vanishing Half
Maggie Hope books (there's a bunch of them, Maggie is a young woman spy in England during WWII)

Right now I'm reading the Beekeper's Apprentice, a spin on Sherlock Holmes, and really enjoying it.

@foodiebee: thank you for mentioning the criticism about American dirt as I didn’t know there had been significant criticism. This comment led me to google this and read a whole bunch about it that I had not been aware of. I thought the book was well written and I thought she did a good job describing post traumatic symptoms but I can see the bigger picture concerns now that I stopped to consider them. Thanks for helping me understand the book differently!

@foodiebee: This was one of the ones I just bought, glad to hear a good review!

I had a weird experience with American Dirt - I preordered it, and then while I was waiting for it to come I read all the criticism. So I read it, and I enjoyed it as a story in the sense that there was a lot of action and it moved along quickly, but it also frustrated me.

@josina: The Smallest Lights in the Universe was excellent. I don’t like fiction, and I tend towards memoirs, which this was. Sara Seger is a brilliant planetary physicist at MIT whose husband died when they had two young kids at home. It was truly a great read.

@LadyDi: I was going to come recommend American Dirt! Hard to read at times but worth it and well written.

I have also been enjoying the Maisie Dobbs mysteries, American Spy, and I am currently reading the new Robert Galbraith mystery that was recently released. I also recommend the Vanishing Half and the Mother’s, both by Brit Bennett.

I'm a big fan of young adult books, so most of the books I've read recently fall under that genre. Almost all of these are pretty heavy books emotionally and are not always easy reads due to the subject matter (sexuality, eating disorders, abuse- physical, emotional, sexual, and mental health disorders, etc.)

The Truth Is by NoNieqa Ramos

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

The Dangerous Art of Blending In by Angelo Surmelis - I had to take breaks while reading this, it made me pretty upset a few times

The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty - there's a mental health aspect to this book, but not a heavy read and surprisingly good as I wasn't expecting much from this

Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella - super cute and light, I love Sophie Kinsella and have read all of her books, including the entire Shopaholic series
