I have a big bag of car toys and the kids seem to love it. The favorites are magna doodles (we got a small one as a party favor that is perfect. I think it's from the dollar store) and a o e piece sorting puzzle. It's like this disk with three shaped holes and the wooden shapes are attached to a string tied around it. We also have lots of books and some other little toys. Just a big of things they don't have at home seem to make them happy.

those water wow melissa and doug books, lacing things, pencil & paper, coloring books, snacks (lots of!), their favorite books they can flip thru solo. And I always reserve one new car toy for when they get restless.

@matador84: sparkle stories! You can get free stories from their podcast, or buy stories on their website. The podcast last week was "sparkle car" and it has a few stories and I think a game. We've only listened to this first story, but it's a great one.

My toddler also loves to play with a handful of tegu blocks.

Her other "magic" car toy is sunglasses!

Duct tape and a light sedative?😂

Kidding LOL! My kids like the travel kit of tegu blocks, a personal fan that has little lights on it, and I save things like happy meal toys for the car.

@Charm54: I haven't seen reusable puffy stickers!! We do use the reusable sticker mats but my 2 year old can't peel them herself so I need to pre-peel them for her.

I might get a new water wow for them--we've used them for a long time and they have kind of lost their newness.

I did find an activity on pinterest where you get a binder and then spray adhesive felt to cardstock hole punched in the binder. Then you have different activities they can do, shape matching, letters, objects like flowers, etc. I don't think it would take me that long to put it together.

LO doesn't really like coloring but LOVES the Melissa and Doug Water Wow. He will also "read" his Poke a Dot book for quite a while in the car. Lately he has also enjoyed kid music like the Wheels on the Bus. Except one night when he was tired I had to listen to "if you're happy and you know it" on repeat for at least 15 minutes. ;)

My almost 3 year old had her first happy meal on our way home yesterday (she ate all the apple slices and only nibbled on the mc nuggets!) and she played with the cheap angry bird toy for the last hour of our trip. So I say stupid new toys are a good bet. Other than that, I'll be following for more ideas.

When we travelled with my 1-year-old, DH was in the backseat with limited ability to pick things up off the floor. I gave him a big bag of soft toys and books and had him keep passing DS toys to replace the ones he dropped.

I have done so many road trips with my kids solo, but I feel it's harder as they get older--they just don't sleep in the car as much! We're doing a 9 hour drive with a 2 and 3 year old later this week.

What are the best things to keep them contained and happy for a while? I'll download a couple of movies on the iPad but I don't want them watching movies the whole time. I've done the mess-free markers and coloring books/crayons, books, but I feel like they always end up dropping them and it's hard for me to pick up stuff from the front seat. Looking for new ideas. :-)
