We live in the city (Lincoln Park) and love it. We are hoping to stay in the city for at least 10-12 years. As the littles age, if they are admitted to selective enrollment high schools, great. If not, then we will move to the north burbs.

You should really look at commute times. Would your DH's job be in the loop/near the metra? My DH works off of Michigan Ave so the metra isn't helpful- just would have to drive if we move up to the burbs.

I would be happy to talk about this more :)

We live in the NW Suburbs as well. I love the area but I'm not sure you would want to be that far out if your husband is going to be downtown. I commuted from the suburbs to the city for a few years and it's definitely not easy at times (especially with the recent winters we've had). I think a lot of it has to do with your budget as well. We knew we wanted a lot of space (4 bedrooms) so that really determined where we could go based on what we wanted to spend. You might want to start on Zillow or Redfin and put in the kind of house you are looking for and see the kinds of places that come up in certain areas.

I grew up in the northwest burbs and live in the western burbs. My husband and I also lived in the city, so I know much of the Chicagoland area. Feel free to wall me!

@SLR: We have a 10 month old, so we are considering schools for the future. We're planing on buying, and my DH will be working in the city, so easy train access/ commute time is important, too!

I've lived in the Northwest burbs for the past 12 years and really like my little area! There are great neighborhoods all over, so it really depends on where your jobs are and what kind of a commute you'd want. Do you have kids (schools) to consider? Would you be looking to buy or rent?

Good luck! And feel free to wall me if you have any specific questions.

We lived in the west loop in the city for years and had our daughter while living there - it's a great family and dog friendly neighborhood that's centrally located. We just moved to the western suburbs (near LaGrange, Western Springs, Hinsdale) and LOVE it. The schools are fantastic and we're a 20 min train ride into the city. We couldn't be happier. Best of luck!

Chicago area bees- DH and I are considering a move to Chicago or the nearby suburbs. We are originally from MI and have been living on the east coast for the past 7 years. We love it out here, but want to move closer to our MI family and friends after having LO. DH has 3 interviews lined up before the end of the year (!) so while we've been thinking about it for awhile, we might have to make the decision rather quickly. Any information you could provide about best neighborhoods in the city and suburbs would help as we look into housing. Any other advice/ info would be much appreciated!!! Excited but nervous about this possible change.....
